  1. 1. In a Presidential election, would you vote for a guy who was born in Canada?

    • Sure. Canadians are cool. Besides, Canadians are more "American" than Hawaiians are.

    • Depends on which part of Canada. I'd never vote for someone born in Quebec but Albertans are cool. They're more "American" than Hawaiians are, that's fer damn sure!
    • Not a chance. Canada is overrun by Islamists and Communists so you never know. If you fish in bad water, you're likely to catch a mutant ninja turtle... or something.
    • I'm a no-borders kinda guy/gal so these national distinctions don't mean anything to me. I'm way better than the rest of you. Worship me, fools.

Mr. Cruz was born in Canada to an American-born mother and Cuban-born father, and was a citizen from birth — but that Canadian factor puts him in the company of other past candidates who have had their eligibility questioned because of the Constitution’s requirement that a president be a “natural born citizen.”

Michael C. Dorf, constitutional law professor at Cornell University, said the term “natural born citizen” has not been clearly defined — and that’s good news for Mr. Cruz.

“This is all sort of framed on the fact that we do not have any case law and it is quite likely that the courts would stay out of it — even if someone brought a challenge,” Mr. Dorf said. “The place that this would be solved ultimately would be the Electoral College.”

Except both of McCain's parents were US citizens at the time of his birth. And he was born on a US air force base I believe.

Cruz only had 1 USC parent at birth and he wasn't born on a US base. He was born in Canada Canada.

I thought you said Canada? If it's Canada Canada, ferget it.

Yep the term Natural Born Citizen is used in very few places. I think a clue as to the founders intent however can be found in the first immigration law passed in 1790; don't know if the "father" stuff would fly today. "And the children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond Sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born Citizens: Provided, that the right of citizenship shall not descend to persons whose fathers have never been resident in the United States." http://www.indiana.edu/~kdhist/H105-documents-web/week08/naturalization1790.html

Fairly good essay here on the subject from the Congressional Research Service, which basically says that if you haven't been naturalized, you are natural born. http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/R42097.pdf

Of course, I have friends who say that if you were delivered C section, you are not natural born.

I know I'm not in the majority with this opinion, but I have just never understood the whole "must be born in America to be really American" argument. Surely there are more important qualities to candidates to discredit them?

I am the USC/petitioner.
