Do I believe that Michael Richards is a racist? Probably not… However, one would probably question his character.

It appears that people are desensitized to the fact that Black people were slaves and the “N” word was one of the many ways we were labeled and degraded. People don’t tend to respect the pain and hurt that is associated with the history of slavery and the ensuing struggle post slavery because it’s presumed that Blacks do not. Why? That is simple… because Blacks address each other using “N” word. Many Blacks (including myself) do not participate in that self destructive behavior (calling each other the “N” word) because we understand the gravity in which the word derived and the ramification of continuing down that path. It is completely insulting and dishonorable to use the word in any context besides educational. It just amazes me that other nationalities call themselves the "N” word within their own social groups and worse to even speak of others in that context. It doesn't help that it's glorified in rap music, movies, comedy, and other media outlets. It perpetuates the notion that it's acceptable. It’s not! For me it’s a hurtful reminder of the awful and despicable pain and suffering my forefathers had to endure.

The only blacks that use the N word and call each other that are the Ns. I'm sure Ed Bradley didn't address other black with "what's up my N."

I just think it total BS that minorities are supposed to be able to say whatever they want to someone, i.e. white male, and they get a free pass, but God forbid someone calls them a name.

well, it's not BS.. white race is the ethnic group in power, therefore they are considered the 'powerful majority', this allows the minorities to call themselves whatever they want.. and although chris rock can get away with his 'cracka' azz cracka' routine, I don't think Dane Cook would survive a my n' jokes.. unfair, maybe, reasonable? no.. just don't do it.. and besides.. I think black folks were already called N' too much by whites since they were brought to the US.. so I think whites already got away with it.. OWNED

again.. this is not rocket science, true, not all afro-americans like the N word, but even if you work, are friends with someone who does, and you actually are one of his n's.. if you're not black, don't say it back.. simple.. (althouh Carlos Mencia interviewed some black gangstas and they said latinos could get away with it, lol.. but anyway..)

also there are connotations.. call a black person 'son' or 'boy' and if u're white, u're gonna get ur azz whacked.. but among blacks, nativeamericans or latinos, it's ok to say son, boy, my n' (word used by latinos now, i dunno why)

Shouldn't be a double standard that one group can call another group a name and no one raises an eyebrow, but if that group comes back with a name all hell breaks loose.

Wife may not have saw or been around more than a handful of black people before coming here, but after working at daughter's school and dealing with the section 8 kids and their parents she fully understands what is an N and the usage of the word. Same kids have called her a Chinese N.
