I don't care what someone is saying to you, you don't hurl racial slurs. That is just too low. He is a comic, he should have been better equipped to deal with hecklers.

What did the heckler's say first?

Does it matter? No matter what they said 2 wrongs don't make a right and he is a public figure and should know better.

If you go to a comedy show and heckle a comedian expect to get CRUSHED. Who doesn't know this? The comedian will say anything to accomplish this. If this is too harsh please stay home and watch PBS. There's a tote bag with your name on it ;)

The comedian isn't a true comedian if all he can do is hurl racial slurs at the hecklers.

I just think it total BS that minorities are supposed to be able to say whatever they want to someone, i.e. white male, and they get a free pass, but God forbid someone calls them a name.

Not what I am saying. Nobody should. But just because some idiot does it does not give you a free pass. So what if someone calls me a cracker or whitey? Am I going to stoop to that level? No. Especially not if I was a public figure.

Well, not to excuse his choice of words but we don't know what the hecklers were saying. In the context of a stand-up routine where being outrageous is part of the act, he might have been sarcastic.

Has anyone ever watch Larry David's Show on HBO? He's played on the idea of blacks calling other blacks, "#######". Larry calls a black friend, "Are you my #######?" It was hilarious and it showed how odd it comes off if anyone else besides a black says it.

I haven't yet seen the video (the link is on the source site), but I would be surprised if it was taken out of context,a s you've suggested. Did anyone watch the video?

I clicked on it, but it says I need Firefox 1.5 to view it...which is odd because that is an older version.

Well, you should not be speculating if you have not *actually* seen the video lest you run afoul of ekerose's "rules"....:lol:

I saw the video and really can't say one way or the other. Epithets were being hurled both ways...I heard "cracker" a few times.

Well allow me to return the favor....

He's a racist. That's it. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a liberal chopfuck.

I'm old, I have experience. Therefore I am right.

:lol::lol:

Or more accurately

Richards should be sent to boot camp because

A stint in the U.S. Army is a real "eye opener" and a vehicle to cut the proverbial "apron strings" and learn to sustain oneself; or spend time peeling potatoes or perhaps in the brig........It's life's "college".

You know...

you've really lost lots of credibility; and given you didn't have much to spare in the first place...........oh well.......like I said “I love Lucy” is on- much more captivating than this thread.

You remind me of when I was in the Philippines 25 years ago; there were some young Americans we were assigned to give a "cultural tour" to so that they may learn something. I don't remember their affiliation but I do remember their indignation over the fact that some locals lived in huts and slept on mats.

Have you found "Charlie" yet?

I'm listening to it on Opie and Anthony now. He sounds wasted.

Do I believe that Michael Richards is a racist? Probably not… However, one would probably question his character.

It appears that people are desensitized to the fact that Black people were slaves and the “N” word was one of the many ways we were labeled and degraded. People don’t tend to respect the pain and hurt that is associated with the history of slavery and the ensuing struggle post slavery because it’s presumed that Blacks do not. Why? That is simple… because Blacks address each other using “N” word. Many Blacks (including myself) do not participate in that self destructive behavior (calling each other the “N” word) because we understand the gravity in which the word derived and the ramification of continuing down that path. It is completely insulting and dishonorable to use the word in any context besides educational. It just amazes me that other nationalities call themselves the "N” word within their own social groups and worse to even speak of others in that context. It doesn't help that it's glorified in rap music, movies, comedy, and other media outlets. It perpetuates the notion that it's acceptable. It’s not! For me it’s a hurtful reminder of the awful and despicable pain and suffering my forefathers had to endure.

I think it was Richard Pryor who first used the word in his routine.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5048430

NPR did a story on it, "How Richard Pryor Changed Comedy."

He pledged to stop using the word after a trip he made to Africa.

He also made a comment about how 50 years ago they would have had them hanging upside down with pitcforks in their bums. I think you have to have some sort of racial tendencies in order to make comments like that. I am not saying that the members of the audience weren't being racist, maybe they were. But neither were right to do and say what they did.
