It varies from state to state. In TX you have to be married for a year to someone who qualifies for Texas residency or qualify for residency yourself in some other way, but do not necessarily have to be a permanent resident (under TX laws, having your name on the deed of a house would qualify you as an in-state resident immediately regardless of immigration status, for example). That having been said, once you have your green card you can apply for federal financial aid regardless of how long you have been here.

All I can say, is that every state has their own rules. Go to the school admissions and ask. Be careful of private schools and independent schools. They are usually over priced, and some "so called Universities" are not actually Universities and the credits do NOT count at an ACCREDITED University!. State supported junior colleges are a great place to start! They usually have lower fees and usually have smaller class sizes. Credits from state junior colleges do transfer to Universities. Research the schools, and talk to students that go there. Make wise decisions, concerning student loans. Be careful not to run up a lot of money for useless degree or certificate. Pick a degree where there are jobs awaiting graduates. There will always be jobs in health care, accounting, computer programming, etc ( or at least those are in high demand in my area)

I agree with the last post. Some degrees are pretty much useless and you end up bringing home less money,because most of your income will go repaying school loans.

Thanks for the further advice, guys. We may not end up living in the state he is in now, so I will definitely contact possible schools and see their policies when I know more.

And I totally agree about the "Useless degrees." It costs SO much money. I'm considering going for a degree in Computer Sciences because I've already a self-taught web designer and programming comes easy. It seems like a rather safe one at the moment.

I suggest going to a community college for two years, then, transfer out to a university. The benefit, you can save as much a 50% to your total tuition. And, your degree is equally important as those who graduate from attending all four years at a university.

Just a note to relay my experience..

In Ohio we did not have to wait for the year resident thing, as I just had to meet with the residence counselor at community college and prove we were married, and that I was a resident of the state for the period of time required. There was a big cost difference for in vs out of state.

Of course since I work at a university dependent gets 50% tuituion and that will come in handy again when the education continues...
