question about computer viruses.

I am having a problem with my webcam and voice chat. It only seems to happen on yahoo. My webcam works on msn. I have tried everything. I even bought a new computer thinking it was a virus. It still does the same thing. My wecam wont connect on yahoo. My son seems to think that somebody i am chatting with on yahoo is sending me virus so i cant open webcam or chat. He says its my s.o but i find that hard to believe. Is it possible for somebody to do this? Thanks

It's possible, if someone really WANTS to do something like that, or you could pick up something by clicking on a link in a Yahoo PM that may or may not be sent to you intentionally -- lots of viruses there. But since it's happened on two different computers and affects Yahoo and not MSN, I'd be more likely to think it's a problem with Yahoo settings. Has it worked in the past? Did you install a new version of Yahoo or do anything different before you started having problems? I haven't used Yahoo voice chat very much because Skype works so well for us, so I don't know if a new version is problematic or not. Make sure you have a good antivirus and a good firewall (the basic version of Zone Alarm is free and a good firewall). And don't click on any links in PMs, even from people you trust, unless someone you're sure you can trust tells you it's a safe link. Good luck.

Do you have a firewall? If so, how is it configured? You may have to allow the program(s) that come with the webcam access via the firewall by setting permissions -- which could or could not be a fairly complex process, depending on the type of firewall you own.

If you don't have a firewall, then...that's a problem right there. Nobody should be online today without a firewall and anti-virus software. Preferably, you should also have at least two or three adware/spyware programs to help combat those vicious programs as well.

Here are some FREE programs you might want to pick up:

• Spybot - Search & Destroy
  
• Ad-Aware SE Personal
  

There are commercial versions of ZoneAlarm, AVG, and Ad-Aware if you really like them and wish to purchase those. However, it's not necessary.

Anyway, I'd recommend getting these programs (if you don't already have programs like these running) and protect your computer, and then scan it for viruses and spyware. You don't know what might be lurking on your hard drive if you've left yourself completely vulnerable all this time.

I would just keep buying new computers till you find one that works,,,,,, Just kiddin. do the setup within yahoo like charles said!
