I was thinking how much my life changed since I got here and I was curious to hear stories of those of you who has been in the US for few years or are married to a foreign person. Let me share you my personal experience: I got here 2 years ago, lived in 3 different cities, worked at 3 different places. I started living in a small apartment and now I'm living in a cute townhouse with a backyard, bought a car, yes old but a good start. I made a road trip from washington state to California. Travelled around the US and abroad. I started building credit and soon back to college which is my next goal and super excited to think about new experiences in the future. What about you guys?

I've been here over 2 years now and a lot has changed, but my biggest accomplishment so far has to be going to college. I never really knew what I wanted to do, so I worked in retail in my home country and continued doing that here.. last summer I finally had enough (always hated it) and found a major that I knew I wanted and could do, so I registered at a community college. And here I am, just today I wrapped up my first year of college, and I'm going to apply to a university next year to finish my Bachelor's degree! :) And this summer I start to volunteer at a wildlife preserve here, which is super exciting as well.

I think our greatest accomplishment is, that my wife and I (both Germans) took a risk with immigrating to the US, settled down, learned a lot new life skills on the way and finally built an existence for us and our daughter. We're happier here than ever before in our lifes. :)

In North Carolina since 2005

My (foreign) hubby is remodeling my (our) house so we can sell it and move. He has already accomplished more in his first month here than my ex did in a year. Kudos to my new hubby!

Gave birth to two wonderful girls and decided to take a 1-year maternity leave to be a more hands-on mom. It's been half a year and it's really harder than working for my paid job. I salute those moms who are able to keep their children happy at most times without having them be entertained by TV for more than an hour a day. I take it one day at a time. If I am able to keep them happy without me losing my patience by yelling a lot in a single day, to me that's a big accomplishment. In January, I'll go back to my $120k a year job but that job is not as difficult as the one that I am in right now. I do not get paid in monetary terms but I do get a lot payment in terms of hugs and kisses from my kiddos!

It is certainly a risk as you didn't know if things would turn out for better or for worse. I'm glad that it worked for your family!

Getting your bachelor's degree is certainly a great idea. Good luck to you.

I totally agree. While I can't even imagine giving birth being a Dad, I sure know what you're talking about staying home with a little kid as I did for the first year. It's a lot of work and you need to be so patient and try not to lose it. At work people respect me for what I do. Kids can give you a really hard time even though all you're doing is care for them and try to make their day go well. They'll thank you years later, that's for sure. But little kids can really push your buttons :)

  • 2 weeks later...

After meeting my US husband I left an abusive marriage and have stopped the destructive behaviour that was slowly killing me.....4 years sober!!!

I am now rebuilding my confidence and working a few hours a week in my husbands office thats HUGE for me after almost 15 years of anxiety issues from being put down and made to feel useless. I am happier now than I ever dared to dream.........just need my son to visit and I'd be elated!!!!
