Jerks who are rude to waiters

I hate places that put an automatic tip on the bill. I'll decide what tip the server should get, and I resent having 18% automatically tagged on. I generally don't return to these places as the service is usually poor. I've noticed two conditions that are common with these places that add the tip for you, they're understaffed, and the staff they do have don't care. One place had a waitress that would be missing the the public space for 30 minutes at a time!

I'm a good tipper, give me good service and I'll give a good tip. Give me average service and I'll give an average tip. Give me poor service and I'll give a poor tip. I never give no tip.

As to chatty servers, constantly asking if you need something, they're a complete pain. The good server knows to keep an I out for you and wait for that eye contact that you need something, or they can just walk by and smile without interrupting to let you know they're available if you need any thing.

They have to for a large party. If you wait on 5 tables in an hour and half and one stiffs you, you still get tips from the others. If you have a table of 15 and all you do is wait on them and they stiff you it sucks. Some people don't get that if you have a 300 dollar bill the tip should be more than 10 dollars.

This is true. Serving in a busy restaurant is not easy people. One of the more stressful jobs I've had.

I feel the same towards waiters who refill my glass of water everytime I drink half of it or when they pour more coffee into my cup without even asking if I want it after I carefully adjusted the sweetener and cream to my taste. I don't get to signal them no immediately especially when I'm enjoying a fine conversation. That would sometimes dampen my dining experience. If I need something from them, I'd ask. Otherwise, I wish they don't just come over and dilute my coffee.

Stop being a pain in the butt and be glad that they gave you more water. I usually run out of water and they never come back to refill the glass. devil.gif

Agreed. A gratuity is an option and I don't like being forced to pay 18% regardless of the quality of service.

I bar tended at one point in life and I never took getting a tip for granted. I felt I had to earn it. Even on a busy night, I still looked each customer in the eye, smiled and gave them my undivided attention, even if it was only for 30 seconds. It is vital to make a connection, even if it is brief. Sure there were always a few stiffs here and there, but I usually made out like a bandit. The majority of the people I encountered appreciated the effort I made and rewarded it. I averaged well over 20% in tips. I've been completely stiffed on a $200 tab, and the same night got a $20 tip for serving one beer. In the food and liquor service business, you make your money with your personality. Even if you xxxxxx royally, if you're sincere, you can still get a good tip. I've shut people off and still got a 20% tip.

Of course having good meth to sell didn't hurt matters. devil.gifdevil.gif

I can understand that if you have a large party booked and one person is covering the tab. But I've seen this happen without large parties, and just as a rule in some places. I don't return because the service normally sucks and they couldn't earn a tip if wasn't forced, When we had our wedding reception at a nightclub, I was covering the entire bill and they did not force a fixed gratuity on me. I tipped 25% because the service was that good and felt the servers certainly earned it. I used to reply on tips, and I never expected a tip for nothing, I expected to earn every tip I got. There were times I went the extra mile for someone who wanted it and got stiffed, there were other times I got a great tip without going to any extra effort at all. It averages out over time. I've rarely seen good service come from a place that forces a gratuity.

And the poor waitress usually has no control over how the food is cooked

Actually they do when they put in the wrong temperature for a steak or they put the order in wrong such as a person orders sunny side up eggs, but the server puts in the computer scrambled. Bacon if the customer ordered extra crispy bacon, but the server decides to be lazy and not put that the customer wanted extra crispy bacon(they just put bacon) into the computer, that is their fault. Also, even if let's say the server puts in the order correctly, if the same server that took the order brings out the food, if the bacon is not covered up by anything, you can easily tell just by LOOKING at the bacon if it's not cooked crispy or not.

True, the server is the final quality control before the dish is given to the customer.

I think that the server should take a few bites out of each steak just to make sure it was cooked as ordered.

But if she is like all hot and everything and flirts with me, it's all good.

I take it you never had sex with a waitress, despite all the political repercussions, and found it to be a religious experience.

How much do you guys tip for deliveries? In our area, food delivery sucks because most establishments set the minimum order to $30, then they add $3.50 for delivery fee within two miles, plus the sales tax, and still expect tip. ranting33va.gif

You gave every customer 30 seconds, including old, balding men but forgot to mention that your stare lingered on blondes and red-heads with a D cup. devil.gif

In many cases that was true. devil.gif But I also like smaller busted women too. I take people for what they are, imperfections and all. I realized many years ago that nobody was flawless like me. devil.gifdevil.gif

The poor delivery guy doesn't make much money and relies on tips to have a decent nights pay. It sucks as a consumer to have to spend $30, then pay a delivery charge and then a tip on top of that. Solution, stay home and cook yourself. laughing.gif

Apparently you had too much meth because you're having delusions of perfection. devil.gif

I cook 90% of the time so I just want to lounge around sometimes and call for food delivery.

You could move to a place that has lower minimum delivery orders. Check out the significant other thread, I just gave you some valuable tips on jeans.
