Jerks who are rude to waiters

Sort of political..I have noticed this trend more in dogmatic people than any particular group. I..E "Compassionate" Liberals, Evangelical Christians right wingers etc. One of my pet peeves.

One of Swanson's Unwritten rules of management and one that tells more about a person instantly than anything else you can observe--"A person who is nice to you but rude to the waiter is not a nice person. (This rule never fails.)" Substitute service workers for waitress. One of my pet peeves is people that are rude or abusive to service staff.

What if the bank teller makes you wait while they gossip with a girlfriend on the cell phone? What if the counter person at Forever 21 won't give you a cash refund? What if the stoner salesclerk can't figure out the correct change in three tries or less?

I so hate that. They expect me to be nice to them, and they are not nice to the customers.

In a way, it's sort of a catch 22. Perhaps, the servers experienced a rude customer, the next customer they serve will probably not be treated with the respect it deserves because the server had put a barrier of hate in front of them now. Therefore, you become their victim of abuse.

Of course I mean unwarranted or uncalled for ..

Of course I mean unwarranted or uncalled for ..

If the counter person will not give you a refund it may be storre policy. Ask for a manager. Still no reason to be rude.

The manager was even more condescending and smug. I made a wonderful scene, still letting my feelings be known, as I walked out the door before security arrived. I had the satisfaction of watching several customers drop items on the floor and head for the opposite exit.

That's making them pay.

Well, I did ball up the receipt and throw it at the salesperson. The wife did go back a few days later to apologize for my actions and exchange the item. She goes to Papaya now instead.

This is entirely cultural. I can speak from my experience only, but...

In Japan, there is no tipping, but absolutely top-notch service, nearly anywhere you go. The Japanese think that their service is what attract customers. Now, how do the people treat the servers? Well, it's common for someone to call the server when they want something. Often times, there is a button on the table to let you do that. The servers greet you, take your order, bring it to you, and otherwise stay out of your way unless you call them. This is a great system, because when you want something, you just have to let them know that you want something, and you don't have to wait for them to check on you. You also don't get checked on when you're in the middle of a private conversation.

In Mongolia, there is also no tipping, but the service is quite bad at most public services. The reason is, it was a communist country, and there only used to be one choice for people, so the level of service wasn't really a factor in bringing in customers. In fact, they probably wanted fewer customers laughing.gif. On the other hand, in people's homes, they are incredibly hospitable. Even if they are extremely poor (I went around to many poor families recruiting kids for the NGO I was running, and some of them make 20-50 dollars per month), they still manage to offer tea, or hot water if they can't even afford that, and a smile, and a joke, and some candy when you leave. Ironically, the rich people are not as in touch with their culture, and act more like snotty rich folks we all know and love in the west.

Now let's talk about the U.S. I am nice to my waiters and waitresses, but I never leave huge tips. I always leave somewhere between 10 and 20 percent, and I would leave no tip if I didn't feel a cultural obligation to. It has nothing to do with my being cheap -- I spent pretty much all of my money to help poor children in Mongolia, and my views are always to be generous to people. The issue is, a waitress works at a restaurant, and here in California, she will make at least 8 dollars an hour, before tips. Restaurants are already expensive enough, and make enough money, I would imagine. They should pay the people who work for them. I don't see the point in giving money to someone for doing their job unless you employ them -- if I were in a position where I was offered money for doing my job from a customer, I would feel very embarrassed.

My SIL went out for lunch yesterday and our waitress was so annoying. Every few minutes she would come by and ask if we needed something or ask how we were doing. The manager even came by a couple of times. We just wanted to eat our lunch and have some conversation but it kept being interrupted. We ended up not giving her a good tip :P
