Is it a good idea to work in insurance when you are a new immigrant? I've been approached (a friend recommended me) by an insurance group for a job interview as an insurance agent. I heard a lot of mixed reviews about working in insurance and I know it can go either way, but my question is: Will it be harder for a foreigner with no experience in insurance and no natural market to be successful compared to someone who is a native of the city they are working in? I am asking this question because I feel that for some jobs your background doesn't matter much ( like in IT for instance) but I can't really tell how being a foreigner affects your success while working in insurance.

You can, even if you are from an English speaking country try to spell & pronounce your

words the way its done in the US, don't wear an unconcern look or frown for that market

(ppl from some countries tend to have an unfriendly facial expression) Show that you are a team

player, be gracious (not groveling) to man. women and child, be confident, dress smartly,

think positive, and you will be just fine.

Is this insurance job one in which you only get paid if you make sales? If so, I would pass on it.

That's what I am thinking too. I have a semi-interview in about a week. I'll keep your advice in mind. Thank you!

Hi Mariana,

I have been an insurance agent for over 12 years and started before I became a citizen and before I was fluent in English. I would not worry about your background. As you learn the business, you will gain trust from customers in what your discuss, not where you are from.

I wish you all the best on your interview. If you have any specific questions, I would be more than happy to help you. I am a P&C agent licensed in all states and sell Auto, Property, VPP and Umbrella insurance.
