You should count on a minimum of 7 months before your interview and receiving your actual visa, and generally speaking quite a bit longer (9-10 months is common). The next step will come when the California center sends you the "NOA2" notice of approval, and that time can vary dramatically -- usually around 6-7 months, so if you filed in February, there probably won't be anything from USCIS until July-August-September.

If your fiance is active-duty military, you may be able to file for an expedite to speed up the process. I don't know the exact rules -- I do know that if he's nearing any deployment you can almost certainly get faster processing. If he's just active and stationed at a base here in the USA, there may not be any way to make it faster.

There are a ton of guides and links in the blue bar at the top of this page. Click on "Immigration Timelines" and from there, choose Igor's List for a great resource of the most recent approvals, or browse the other people's timelines from around the same time as yours. You should fill in your own timeline here, not only because it will give you an estimated date of approval, but also because it helps everyone as this site compiles the data and keeps great records and predictions of processing times.

As the first response said, be prepared for a 7 month wait before hearing back from California and another 2-3 months for the UK embassy stuff to process. So, estimate about 10 months from filing to getting your visa in hand.

If he's active military, look into requesting an expedite for your case!

It's not quicker if you have kids/were married. It's not slower. That does not factor into the processing times and would only be brought up at the interview stage.

I can sympathize with your situation. I lived with my fiance in London for a year and a half, but left last May when I couldn't pursue another visa. Going back and forth is hard. He visited for two weeks in November (when we decided to get married) and I just visited him for two weeks in London at the end of March. He'll be visiting again in August for another two weeks before the visa gets approved (we filed in December and are hoping he will have his visa by mid-October). Both of us save for the trips and not much else at this point!

If you filed in February, then best case you'll here by end of September (if you don't have an expedite), but plan more for Christmastime.

To file for an expedite, go here and read the instructions: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=16a6b1be1ce85210VgnVCM100000082ca60aRCRD&vgnextchannel=db029c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6a1RCRD
