Mother-in-law getting a tourist visa to US for wedding

Hello,

I am a US citizen planning to marry a Brazilian citizen on the K-1 visa in the next year. We would really like for his mother to come for the wedding celebration in the US. She currently does not have a tourist visa for the US. I recently read a post where in this exact situation, the Brazilian mother-in-law was denied a tourist visa. My fiance's mother has lots of ties to brazil (husband, son, house, car, job). but the mother-in-law who was denied a tourist visa in the post i read also had all of these things.

I wanted to know, is this a common problem? If so, should she apply for the tourist visa before we start the K-1 process? Or would her applying for a visa make it difficult for us to get the K-1? She has no intention of moving to the US, I just want to know how we can get her here for the wedding!

My mother is in Russia, and she got denied a B2 last month without the IO even looking at her papers. They did not read my letter of invitation stating that my mom had not seen me or her grandchildren for 7 years. They did not let her say a word. When she finally asked why, the IO said, "We got a directive to deny ALL parents". And indeed all the mothers that were there with her got denied. So did other parents the previous week (a friend's mother had an interview too).

So it is indeed unpredictible and they don't really care about ties or intentions.

Brazil has an exceedingly low refusal rate and is on a watchlist to be a part of the Visa Waiver Program. All you can do is try, but chances aren't so bad.

I got my mother-in-law here from Thailand. It was her first time to the States. She didn't seem to have too many problems applying. She has ties to Thailand and had beed been to several other countries before on vacation all returning to thailand. They gave her a 10 year visa? is that what's it's called? I assume she will still have to apply again next year when she comes again...

miew, if she got a visa good for 10 years then she can use it to request repeated entry for 10 years. She doesn't need to reapply next year. She can't stay more than her alloted time, but she can reuse it for 10 years.

OP don’t go by the stories you read on the forums, you will not find out if you mother in law would get the visa or not until she applies for it.

Before or After K1 does not make much difference, as B2 visa is evaluated on its own merit.

Not urban legends, they are true stories. My MIL has been denied twice. They didn't look at documents and were very impolite to her

Thats what you think they do not look at the documents.

Most COs have enough information on hand before making decision.

Comon ppl they are not just pulling the names out of hat COs are trained what to look for, what doc to look for every city, every country has their own list of things they focus on.

Rude / impolite I dont't know I have watched ppl on other side of window being rude and impolite where they have to call security to escort out the applicant as well.
