We can't do all the stuff they want us to do without forcing us all to go kill ourselves. I hear this draft will include women.

It is about time! I don't believe there should be a draft, but I am glad to see women finally included. That is something that has bothered me since I first learned about the selective service process years ago. Women sould have to register as well as men.

It always amazes me though that one can be fully expected to fight and die for a country, yet not allowed to vote until one is Naturalised. Something is terribly wrong there IMO

I agree!

I am opposed to a draft for anyone; however, if there is going to be a draft (and I don't believe there will be -- I think this is just a stunt pulled by Rangel in order to get people to say, "Look! The government is going to draft us! Let's stop this conflict and pull out immediately!"), it should be equal and include both men and women. I never understood the antiquated notion of women not signing up for selective service.

Sure. And just like any right-thinking male, you can bet your ####### I'd dodge right out of this draft. I'm not going to invade Iran or any other country to further the economic/political imperialism of the U.S.

Some might say avoiding a draft is cowardly; I feel, in this situation, it would be the only ethical thing to do.

Next time we're in a WWII situation, ask me again.

I think we otta sell some cookies to buy Alex a plane ticket! Cookies get your cookies here! need money for good cause!

Do you even have any day how that sounds and the implications of it. One has a duty to the country, not the government.

Really? Our duty is to our country? And who exactly articulates what a citizen's duty to a country is but it's government. You will notice that I specifically mentioned "ELECTED officials" as defining that duty, so theoretically, this so-called duty is all our own doing. I'm not saying I like how this sounds, just trying to describe the slippery-slope the use of the military in general creates. Perhaps the purpose of proposing this legislation is only trying to scare the bejesus out of us, and force us to take drastic action, i.e. get the heck out of Iraq?

The fact is- YOU do have a duty to your country. The reinstatement of the draft I believe would be a very positive thing since most young men in this country (U.S.A., ekrose you have no say here!) are very much detached from the reality that their very existence, or way of life, is a result of those that serve this country.

I don't want to discount the fact that most U.S. "kids" growing up these days are completely inept and unable to function in the "real world"......A stint in the U.S. Army is a real "eye opener" and a vehicle to cut the proverbial "apron strings" and learn to sustain oneself; or spend time peeling potatoes or perhaps in the brig........It's life's "college".

Those that have served and are reading this post can relate to what I just said......

Many countries require it's citizens to serve a couple of years in the military.

...

* 7.14 Germany

A conscientious objector may petition for permission to do civilian alternative service, "civilian service" (Zivildienst) instead for nine months, which is usually accepted. A third option is to become a foreign development aide (Entwicklungshelfer) for at least eighteen months.

It's a choice in Germany to do service in the military or in a civilian capacity such as a hosipital, nursing home, work with the disabled, etc..

1. Erekose *should* have some say, considering that he would be drafted if there was a draft.

2. You don't care about a draft because you're too old for it to happen to you. If Kaydee is the right age, she'd be drafted by the proposed draft.

3. We have a duty to our country, not our wacko government.

4. Our way of life in this country is owed to men who fought in WWII and WWII as a whole. That is for sure. I'm not sure that any "police action" has helped preserve our quality of life in any way since then. Certainly the Iraq war does not, and clearly the "fight them over there so they don't come here" argument was created by Faux News/Republican propoganda machine arseholes and has no foundation in reality or likely (or possible) events. If you believe it, please save yourself the embarrassment and don't admit it.

5. This generation is not inept and unable to function in the real world. The real world has buried them in debt if they choose to study and then asks them to take low-paying jobs after they graduate. Stop making yourself sound so ancient. Old people always blather on about how the younger generation is weak. Doesn't it bother you to be a cliche?

6. My '"life's 'college'" was college. Good enough for me.

Here is another article with more detail:
Rep. Rangel will seek to reinstate draft

By JOHN HEILPRIN, Associated Press Writer

1 hour, 21 minutes ago

...

"There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way," Rangel said.

...

He's got a point there.
