Process once in the US

To all.

Due to some circumstances that have changed here in Aus and that I have my Visa to enter the US, how long do I need to be in the US for until I can leave back to Australia with the necessary documents such as green card & SSN. If anyone can help with this would be great. Thanks Wolf

You can leave the same day after you arrive on an immigrant visa.

Your endorsed visa will serve as a temporary green card for a period of up to a year, although you may need to show CBP proof that you have not abandoned your residency if you are outside the US over six months.

Yep, as the others said you can leave the same day, but how long do you plan to be outside the USA? Because to preserve your greencard, you will need to spend the majority of your time inside the USA.

Thank you all for your responses. its a CR1. what length of time would i need to stay there to proof Ive been there long enough? What about multiple entries? What if I purchase a small business in the US or a property? is this going to be enough after a year? also what happens after a year when the visa runs out what is the process to renew it?

You start ALL OVER. There is no renewing it. And you have to spend more time in the USA than out of it for it to be considered not abandoned.

A green card is for living in the United States. Some people try to treat it as a visa and come and go as they please; that is not its intended purpose and CBP may very well begin the process to revoke your green card for attempting to do this.

Generally speaking, you must spend more time in the US than out (so at least six months of every twelve), else your green card is at risk.

Search "maintaining permanent resident status USA" and do some study. There's not a simple answer.
