I noticed that just about every major airline changed the free baggage allowance from 70 lbs to 50 lbs except for baggage checked to/from brazil, which can still check 2 bags up to 70 lbs for free.. why is that? Im not complaining, I feel fortunate. I plan to pack lightly on my next trip to Brazil to help my fiancee immigrate by bringing alot of her stuff up with me.(hoping her K1 visa is approved)

Im just wondeirng if anyone knows why brazil lucked out and if that rule will change anytime soon? I know a few countries were made to comply at later dates, but they posted the dates that the rules would change in their baggage policy pages. I just hope it atleast holds til my fiancee flies up too. its not that bad if you go over the limit, I think you just pay 25 bucks per bag, but still :P

I really don't know if it will change, I don't believe all airlines will change at the same time, or at all. Where did you see that was such ''rule''? Isn't it a rule of the ariline?

I came to the States using Charles' baggage allowance, he only brought a few clothes with him so I could use his limit, so 32kg x2 of his + 32 x2 of mine and we carried 2 heavy leather coats, and the carryon was I think 13kg per person. It was more than enough, I got rid of a lot of things, only brought clothes, shoes, some books, some cds, photos, and was way less than 32kg each luggage. In our case we flew Continental and they don't allow extra luggage, not even paying. You should check with your airline to see if that can be done if your fiancée has too much stuff she wants to bring to the States. My advice is leave some things behind, after all it's just material things, they can be replaced ;)

Hi NessaandCharles, I saw it on the websites of several major airlines under their baggage policies. I noticed it on the continental website first when I was checking to see how much of my fiancees stuff I can bring back with me. It didnt give a reason, so I checked with other airline websites hoping they would give an explanation or state if the rule was temporary and would change later or if it was permanent. But most major airlines lowered the allowance from 32 Kg to 23 Kg under new international reccomondations for reasoning of saving fuel, reducing load, etc.

Im just wondering why Brazil is an exception to the rule.

here have a look:
