Guys I have a question about car insurance. My fiancé and I recently bought a new car to which she is driving and insured under but im not as I am not living in the states yet.

When I was living in Canada I was quoted $6000 for car insurance because being an Australian I had no driving record in Canada. I wasn't allowed to transfer my driving record to Canada.

Does anyone know how car insurance works in the states?

Thanks

I think that some of the insurance companies have a place on the sign-up form to put how long you have been a driver in foreign countries. I'm not entirely sure how much of an influence that has regarding pricing, though.

What would Xenu do?

i suggest

WHEN you get into USA,

and have a drivers license,

THEN

purchase an old volvo station wagon (V70 XC AWD is nice) , pay cash,

and only have 'liability' on the car.

Keep it like that for 1 year.

Then after the year, sell the car, get on your spouse's insurance and car.

otherwise? is big hassle, all the way round.

What I've just described is about 3800 usd for the year (not knowing your age)

For you to be added to a new car purchase without a license without any history in the USA is about 420/month for full coverage on a new car that's not in your name.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

It depends on the State. In Michigan they have insurance polices that cover anyone that is driving with a valid licenses even if they are not on the policy. My nephew recently got into an accident in my grandmother's car and her insurance company totaled it out and cut her a check and he was not listed on her insurance as a driver. However, in Ohio the only person covered are those listed on the policy.

Excellent advice, and also something I plan to do when my fiancee arrives: Buy an old minivan from the early 90s. Now the question is, Previa or Town & Country :P

What would Xenu do?

Hint - the Previa can hold a full sheet of plywood, or a stack of plywood.

when my husband first added me to his insurance. All they asked me was how long I had been driving in Canada but they never asked for proof or anything. The insurance rate didn't sky rocket or anything even though I had no US driving history..

When my wife got here and I added her to my insurance after she got her license I and my agent both thought my insurance would go up. Turns out it actually went down by about $20 per 6 months. Currently we pay about $1200 per year for full coverage on a 2004 Durango and a 2012 Focus.
