Well if the only reason they are leaving Germany, which enjoys a quality of life on par with the U.S., is to homeschool their kids, why not choose a place where they don't have to fight an immigration battle?

Folk make bad choices all the time, and strive to keep the result of their choices.

This is just an example of a bad choice sustained over time, really.

I have no sympathy for this family.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Exactly. The other point is that there are alternatives available within the EU that this family could have made use of. This is no reason to seek asylum.

Yep - I just heard about this case on radio on the way to work and I was like no... they are abusing the asylum system.

Asylum system is set up for someone who fears for their life coz of the political reason etc.

It has nothing to do with their religion. Schulpflicht applies to everyone in Germany. There are schools run by churches and other non-public schools that one can enroll ones kids in. It's not a one size fits all model. But every child has to attend school.

What if they can prove that enrolling in any school available would compromise their ability to raise their child according to their religious beliefs?

I wish we could all live by our religious beliefs, but we can't.

My religious beliefs condemn killing. I don't even kill bugs. My tax money goes to support killing. I can't just stop paying taxes.

What would Xenu do?

There's a newer thread somewhere about this same case. I couldn't find it though.

Not necessarily. It prob would for anyone wanting to "escape" to the US in order to home school their kids. Well, assuming it was illegal in their country. Allowing that wouldn't mean that anyone gets to claim asylum for anything.

Oh no, of course not, they couldn't claim asylum for anything! But why would they need to if a desire for homeschooling your children were seen as a sufficient reason. Maybe I am just a suspicious sort but I rather expect that if this case were allowed the number of people seeking asylum here for homeschooling would quite literally EXPLODE! Besides, a lot of those homeschoolers are a strange bunch!
