My brother in law has a green card, and he has been out of the US for about 6 months, but will be returning in the next few months. my question is can he travel to the US with his green card but without his parents, or does he need to be accompanied by an adult? if he does travel alone is there any specific document he may need? like a notarized letter from parents. please advise.

thank you

It depends on the laws in your country as to how minor kids are allowed to exit (traveling alone).

As far as entering the US, he needs a valid passport and his unexpired Green Card.

Keep in mind, a green card holder cannot remain outside the US for more than 12 months without a re-entry permit. If he exceeds 12 months, he can be denied entry even if his GC is still valid.

If he is a child most airlines have rules about accepting unescorted minors. You usually must pay a fee, have contact information of who will pick them up ( and they will only be released to that person, not that persons spouse/child/mother/other ) and it can't be the last connection of the day if there are connections to be made.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.
