How to Send Packet

This is sort of a organizational question for those type A personalities out there, but what is the best way to submit the I-130/I-485 packet? In a binder? Paper clipped/binder clipped by application plus supporting docs? Staples for copies that are fronts and backs or no staple? I know its a silly question, but I don't want anything denied/sent back because I put a staple I wasn't supposed to!

I wouldn't use staples since it will eventually be scanned.. although I had a stand alone 130, I just used paper clips no problem

I would paper clip all relevant documents together in sets. For example all 130 documents together, 485 together and so on. Then binder clip the whole stack together, attach a summary sheet listing all documents, place in an envelope/mailer and ship it out!

Staples IMHO will be more of an aggravation for the person separating the documents.

They are going to undo whatever you do, and redo it themselves in their own way in their own folders. So spend very little time "organizing" your packet because it will all be ruined the instant they get it. Make it easy for them, don't use staples.

In preparing your packet, please take note of the following:

- Do not use binders or folders that cannot be easily disassembled.

- Use ACCO fasteners to hold together thick or bulky applications or petitions. Two-hole punching the top of the material for easy placement in the file is appreciated.

- The use of tabs assist in locating items listed as attachments. The tabs should be placed on the bottom and not the side for ease in filing.

- Avoid using heavy-duty staples; instead use ACCO fasteners or heavy clips.

- Avoid submitting originals unless specifically required. Avoid submitting oversized documentation when possible.

I used this as our guide for our I-130 and used acco fasteners as suggested and used separated the different sections using 3M tabs that I wrote what each section was and stuck them at the bottom of the pages not the side.

Good link Hikergirl, but they say elsewhere to NOT use acco fasteners when submitting to the Chicago Lockbox.

3. Take the following steps to avoid delays in processing applications or petitions through the Chicago Lockbox.

Do NOT send original passports or other valuable personal documents. Make sure that copies of original passports or personal documents are made on standard white letter-sized paper (8.5” x 11”)

Use paperclips when attaching supporting personal documents to forms (do NOT use “ACCO” fasteners; staples are acceptable when attaching fees).

Personally, I don't think you should touch your papers too much - let them do what they want. Putting holes in the wrong place can make a disaster.
