Hi all, would like advice from anyone who has experienced the same problem as me.

My original visa, which is a B-2 Tourist visa expires on the 13th of may 2013 ( in 3 weeks time). As does my Driver's license, which goes by the date of my visa. However, 2 weeks ago I sent away my application for Adjustment of Status ( Green Card ), so literally just started this new process. Which, to my understanding can take a very long time.

So my problem is, my current visa and driver's licence will expire long before I get my green card......but I need my green card in order to renew my driver's license. Have any of you found another way, or able to use another document in order to renew their driver's license? I know it's a long shot, because I just got off the phone with my local DMV office who explained that there was no possible way for me to renew it with out a valid green card or any type of valid immigration visa.

I'm really hoping someone can give me some advice and lead me to believe there is light at the end of the tunnel. I can't imagine not being able to drive for months on end. I also sent away form I-765, application for work authorization. And I am lead to believe that I should hear back about that first....does this come with a social security number? Can the social security number be used to renew driver's license?

Many thanks in advance.

Unfortunately you will need to wait! Your only option is wait for your EAD (work permit) to get a new driver's license. Usually takes 60 to 70 days after you send your package. And NO, it doesn't come with the SSN. After receiving your EAD you will need to go to your local SSN office and get it. Actually you indeed need a SSN to get a drivers license but is not a proof of residence that's why you need a wirk permit, a greencard or proof of citizenship. Whatever it proof your legally here. I know is not the best news but we the EAD you dont need to wait for months and months to get your GC

Many thanks for your help. I am just wondering if maybe I could use my UK driver's license instead? Has anyone else been able to do this? When I first came here over a year ago, I was able to use my UK license, and it was valid to use here for up to a year from the date of arrival. The reason I got an american license so early was to lower the car insurance. However, I left the country for a week in November, and then re-entered. Is it possible that I could have another year from my last date of arrival, to be able to use my UK license?

Thanks everyone

Call and ask the DMV in your state. Different states have different rules.

Yeah...we made a wasted visit to DMV last Friday.

From the web site, it looked like they simply wanted the EAD card,

but once I got there, they showed me another web page that says...

1) 1 primary ID (which EAD covers)

2) Social Security Card

3) 2 secondary IDs and/or documents that show proof of current resident address

such as bank/utility statements. The lady told me the letters we receive from

USCIS and SSA are also good.

Luckily we had (1) and (3), but we just turned in the Social Security card

that morning to get her last name changed...so we were turned away.

That said, since the Social Security card had her maiden last name

which doesn't match the new last name on the EAD card,

I'm not 100% sure that DMV would have accepted anyway.

Just few things to think about and prepare...

I thought it expires with EAD...but that 's good question and should probably asked in a separate thread...

and MODs don't like people highjacking other's question.

The current thread (from 2013) is now closed to further comment.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
