Many members have been and many many more have not been asked for a copy of the birth certificate. So usually they will not ask for a copy but occasionally they do since the start of the transfers.

@OP

Yes go home and get the birth certificate corrected! You never know when you may get your NOA2 (make sure you make an account on the USCIS website to receive continued email updates) and the original or certified copy of the birth certificate will be needed by the NVC. I hope you can get it fixed quickly without too much hassle. :)

They mean a certificate that you order from the agency in your country or locality that is in charge of birth records. It is an "official copy" of the record in their files. It does not mean notarized by a notary or certified by an individual.

I'm a dual US/Hungarian citizen (both by birth; Hungarian citizenship verification TBA), and my husband is a dual British/Irish citizen (by treaty) from Northern Ireland. We are atheists.

All advice is given pursuant to the Disclaimer that you may read at the bottom of each forum page.

LATEST STEPS:

28 Jun 2013: POE Houston

08 Jul 2013: SSN received (at SSA office)

07 Aug 2013: Green Card received

27 Feb 2014: Whoa, life happened. Planning move "back home" together to Republic of Ireland by end of April.

29 Apr 2014: POE Dublin through Heathrow

15 May 2014: Received formal residency/work permission (GNIB card with Stamp 4, one year renewable) for the ROI

Now there are 3 words appearing in the discussion . "Original" , "Official" or "Certified" copy of the birth certificate . Are these one and the same or different ? If they keep "Original" copy with them it will be problematic as this may be required later or elsewhere . Can an "Attested copy" not serve the purpose ?

Thanks

It is fine IF it is issued by the issuing agency. So a copy of the birth certificate that you order and receive from the place that issues birth certificates in your country is OK. A photocopy of a birth certificate that is not issued by the agency that issues birth certificates is NOT OK.

For example, I was married in Aberdeen. If I lost my marriage certificate, I could not have my husband make a copy of his marriage certificate and have his accounts payable guy notarize it. I would need to order a new copy from the head marriage registrar in Aberdeen, or from her boss in Edinburgh. They place a seal on it and stamp the seal (not very well, but they do it).

Really, stop complicating this so much. An acceptable copy comes from the same place the original certificate came from.

Alas, India has a different problem for this.

Is best to chase this down in the India forum, not hijaak a thread where there's a RoP OFW in the Middle East chasing documents back in the RoP.
