nay. that was my question, what about it? plenty of punched holes in this moral decay fourth generation theory.

apologies - it's not a theory.

if you aren't directly affected by the decay, well, you were blessed . Keep On, Keeping on !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

my son has a call of duty shirt. a guy is holding a gun in the image on the front. i've warned him that he might be asked to turn it inside out, but it hasn't happened yet. there are plenty of kids around here that were hunting related shirts and camo. he dresses himself and he can deal with any request from his teachers himself as well, granted i purchased the shirt. further, i don't think its inappropriate.

When my kids were in school they knew that they were free to wear anything they wanted as long as they knew they might be asked to turn their t-shirts inside out or revisit their dress code, by the teachers. I thought it would be a great opportunity for them to learn how the real world works and how individual rights interact. But then again, I was raised wit the notion that I should bring my A-game to school, and in case of trouble I'd get reprimanded by my teacher/principal followed by punishment at home. What were we thinking by respecting our teachers and treating them with deference! Tsk tsk tsk...

Has everyone seen the latest on this? The teacher involved is claiming the student tried to incite a riot. Apparently the boy's lawyer says otherwise and I guess they have the tape from the school?

FYI, it didn't happen in class but at lunch.

it's all really quite dumb.

this is the thing, when a teacher asks you to do something of this nature, you do it. after following the request, you go to your guidance counselor or principal - someone of authority, and ask for an explanation.

if the explanation is not satisfactory and you want to wear the shirt anyway, prepare for some sort of discipline.

if the explanation turns in your favor, the original request from the teacher was in retrospect misapplied, turn your shirt back right side out. end of story.

one of the biggest problems facing public education is that parents do not back up teachers' application of discipline. it's like when you have parents with two different parenting styles and one is always contradicting the other. if you fight about it in front of the kid - you both lose clout. but if you present a united front - you gain respect and both maintain authority.

A West Virginia teen who was arrested and suspended for wearing a National Rifle Association T-shirt to school returned to class Monday wearing the same shirt that got him into trouble.

Jared Marcum, 14, was joined by about 100 other students across Logan County who wore shirts with a similar gun rights theme in a show of support for free speech.

Because it involved an NRA promotional piece of clothing. Gun nuts get very upset when this promotional gear isn't properly worshipped.

Yes you are right coz we like to stand up for our rights.

As far as I know, most school dress codes prohibit clothing that promotes violence against children.

So when did NRA logo become violence against children?

Considering that this is West Virginia and all...

I wonder if the same thing would have happened to a kid wearing a shirt with victims of whichever massacre on it, and a slogan which was pro-gun control.

If the teachers would have approved of someone against gun rights, they must approve of someone pro-gun rights. The issue is if he used this shirt to create an environment where kids are unable to concentrate on their lessons, in which case it's perfectly reasonable that he be removed from that environment.

I think that must be taken into consideration as well...

i highly doubt there is an example of the exact opposite. there aren't very many people in this country that do not support the second amendment, let alone sport tshirts to that effect..

Well, it sounds like it's time for a science experiment. Although I live in California, once my fiancee/stepkids arrive, I'll send the 15 year old to high school with such a shirt and see what happens. :P

The problem is, I think he cares a lot more about his right to play soccer than his right to have a gun.

What would Xenu do?
