So glad my daughter goes to a school with uniforms! Makes my life AND her's so much easier!

There is nothing wrong with the uniform, it makes kids and parents life easy as well it gives the kid a feeling of being a part of that commuunity / Organization.

Completely in favor of uniform atleast until they grad high school.

but what about kids' freedom of speech?

i'm glad there aren't uniforms in this district. for the majority of us there aren't uniforms in life, might as well have kids deal in reality.

Having a uniform has nothing to do with freedom of speech – that the code which applies to every student in the school.

In the following case as per the article the shirt kid was wearing was not in violation of school policy (I have repeated this multiple times but as usual u cannot get your head around it)

Actually, I don't know about this issue. I'll explain what I mean.

Muslim children and Sikh children are allowed to wear their religious attire to class. I think that in some settings, these things could cause an equally large disturbance as the NRA shirt this boy was wearing (due to the ignorance of people blaming terrorist attacks on a religion, or on all people who wear turbans, etc.)

What a wise teacher would do is not to ask the kids to remove their religious clothing. It would be to address the reason it is causing a disturbance, have a discussion, and put it behind them. Why not take the same approach with this shirt? He is welcome to wear his views on this issue, don't let it cause a disturbance. If he had the NRA logo tattooed onto his forehead, would they require him to get a tattoo removal done?

We're comparing NRA promotional clothing to the wearing of religious attire now?

excuse you. i understand that a teacher asked him to turn the shirt inside out. his refusal cause a disturbance. i've not read anything about the teacher being reprimanded, only the student. what i can't get my head around is your whining yesterday about this kid's freedom of speech being trampled upon, and today you support uniforms. i thought this was all 'very disturbing'?

west virginia, i'd say that's not far off the mark.

Why did he have to turn the shirt inside out? was the shirt in violation of the school's policy?

why are you asking me questions you know the answers to?

you said you were "very disturbed" that a kid was pulled out of lunch line and asked to turn his shirt inside out. i'm wondering why you feel the need to argue with me about this, as if this were the first time a teacher has misapplied dress code. why is this particular instance so disturbing to you?

Because it involved an NRA promotional piece of clothing. Gun nuts get very upset when this promotional gear isn't properly worshipped.

i doubt there would be any support garnered for this kid if the shirt was merely a gun with a video game name or slogan across the top.

Common sense would tell any parent of sound mind that dressing your kid in clothes decorated with images of firearms is not appropriate. Obviously, this kid's parents lack common sense and sound mind.

my son has a call of duty shirt. a guy is holding a gun in the image on the front. i've warned him that he might be asked to turn it inside out, but it hasn't happened yet. there are plenty of kids around here that were hunting related shirts and camo. he dresses himself and he can deal with any request from his teachers himself as well, granted i purchased the shirt. further, i don't think its inappropriate.

Has everyone seen the latest on this? The teacher involved is claiming the student tried to incite a riot. Apparently the boy's lawyer says otherwise and I guess they have the tape from the school?

FYI, it didn't happen in class but at lunch.

I knew they wouldn't have arrested him just for not taking off the shirt.

What would Xenu do?
