I would not be supporting the kid if he was violating the school policy - in this case atleast right now it seems he was not.

Most schools have a clause in the dress code revolving around "offensive or distracting articles of clothing" - which this could arguably fall under.

I am all for protesting school dress codes, but it doesn't surprise me that a gun on a shirt would be a big no-no.

I am the USC/petitioner.

Actually, I don't know about this issue. I'll explain what I mean.

Muslim children and Sikh children are allowed to wear their religious attire to class. I think that in some settings, these things could cause an equally large disturbance as the NRA shirt this boy was wearing (due to the ignorance of people blaming terrorist attacks on a religion, or on all people who wear turbans, etc.)

What a wise teacher would do is not to ask the kids to remove their religious clothing. It would be to address the reason it is causing a disturbance, have a discussion, and put it behind them. Why not take the same approach with this shirt? He is welcome to wear his views on this issue, don't let it cause a disturbance. If he had the NRA logo tattooed onto his forehead, would they require him to get a tattoo removal done?

Apologies, when corporal punishment gets taken out of the picture, and the fear of corporal punishment, then it's a huge pile of moral decay to look back upon. This kid is the end-result of at least 4 generations of moral decay in his family unit.

That's quite a conclusion to come to based on a t-shirt.

Not at all ! Par for the course, actually.

Perhaps we're not on the same course?

You would be ok if you or your family members were arrested while exercising your rights?

i'm sorry but, you don't know why the kid was arrested other than what was in the article. he wasn't arrested for 'exercising his rights' and again kids don't have rights like you're proposing in a school setting.

You said Guns =violence

I have Eight Guns and Zero Violence

8=0 Fail

No epic fail

1. this article isn't about you.

2. this article isn't about your guns.

3. this article isn't about the violence level in your home.

3. public schools determine their dress code. in many schools, guns are not allowed on clothing, because of their association with violence.

4. i said a teacher could see the shirt as violent or distracting in correlation with their dress code. a matter of interpretation which is generally left up to teachers or other authoritative personnel in the school. i didn't say guns equal violence.

We are most definitely not on the same course. Are we ever?

So if a kid went to school with an Obama T-shirt and the teacher made a judgement it was distracting, you would have no problem with the kid being forced to take it off

better than having to buy my kid uniforms.

kind of like the rule where girls can only have their shorts or skirts one inch above the knee. you can hardly buy shorts for girls anymore that are one inch above the knee, unless you're catching the duggar's hand me downs. still, the dress code is what it is. like i said before, i think the kid should be allowed to wear the shirt. i'm not a fan of stifling kids' expression. i do find this particular instance a little funny though, normally it's the right telling people what to wear and what is acceptable free speech and what isn't.

So glad my daughter goes to a school with uniforms! Makes my life AND her's so much easier!

After seeing many kids in my high school bullied for not having the "cool" clothes, I fully support school uniforms. Though kids will find other reasons to be *ssholes to each other, of course.
