Hello,

I've recently got engaged and went through the whole process of filling for a fiance visa but im very confused. I want to plan my wedding and know when exactly will i take off from school so it doesnt help not know how long the wait will be. But from what im reading its suppose to be less than a year but does that vary? Like does it depend on where the fiancé is from? Mine is from Yemen so will that have a big effect on how fast the process will go? Someone please help me!

Thanks:)

You just filed your petition. You have quite a while to go before the petition will be approved. Current processing times are around 6 months. After NVC receives your next batch of files they will send it to the Embassy and the Embassy will set the interview date. The US Embassy in Sanaa does take a couple months at least to issue an interview appointment. There is also additional waiting time for background checks which fall under administrative processing (can be before or after interview). But they are picking up the pace as of lately. As a general rule do not make any concrete plans until your fiance has his visa in hand.

The process length can vary a lot. I think its fairly common to do a civil ceremony after this paperwork is all said and done and have a 'wedding' after.. for my fiance and I we have been waiting nearly 8 months and still haven't received an NOA2 or any RFE's so I think planning a wedding for a year after we had gotten engaged would have been quite risky. We are planning our 'wedding' for about about a year and a few months from now (two years after we were engaged), to ensure we will be able to make it and are just planning on getting married at the courthouse when he arrives to save the hassle of trying to time it right. I'm not sure about the country affecting timing.. but I hope that somewhat helps you with your planning! =]

The country the beneficiary is from absolutely has an effect on the timing. No matter what Embassy your fiance interviews at you can expect the background checks will take some time. How long? No way to tell. It takes as long as it takes. Especially if your fiance is from Yemen. It's no problem if you have nothing to hide, but you just have to wait it out. Look, once the K-1 is issued your fiance will have about 6 months (depending on when his police clearances or medicals expire I think) to enter the US before the visa expires and you must get married within 90 days. That is plenty of time to plan a wedding. Or as mentioned do a civil ceremony first to get your marriage certificate and apply for adjustment of status, then plan the wedding party at your leisure.
