It might be funny if it wasn't for recent history telling us otherwise. The invincibility of the US was shattered during the latest two wars.

No it wasn't.

Good luck with that, I'm sure that the Iraqis and the people of Afghanistan will disagree.

Impossible to hold down an insurgency if you're not willing to use a scorched earth tactic. Not that I think we should, in fact I don't think that should ever happen. Besides, both regimes were forced out of power as I recall........ easily. But hanging around and occupying a country is nearly impossible for any army when you're constantly being targeted by domestic freedom fighters or whatever you want to call them.

But your point (I think) is that if Americans wanted to hold out against a fascist domestic government, we learned from Afghanistan and Iraq that domestic freedom fighters with substantial small arms stockpiles could successfully defeat the US occupying force. Well, that all depends on the resolve of the military. I doubt it was as high in the Iraq/Afghanistan wars as it would be to keep the homeland together. I guess ultimately, if there were no rules or compassion, small bands of US freedom fighters would stand no chance against the mechanized US military.

We are talking hypotheticals here of course

Of course

- but it also depends on the mental state of the military. In other countries where governments have had to fight off an inside force a percentage of the military defects to the other side with their training and equipment. If you have a large enough defection, you get a full blown civil war - But the first step has always been fighters using small arms.

That's what I mean by resolve. Assuming the soldiers felt strong enough in the cause. In Egypt, the military defected just as you mentioned and the govt was overthrown and they did it without small arms. You start firing at the military, they're likely to fight back. Your best bet is to get the military on your side by making them choose to not murder unarmed protesters after being ordered to by the govt. Of course, if they decide to fire, you're screwed but you would have been screwed anyway taking an Ak-47 against a Bradley bushmaster.

People choose guns over bombs because the punishment isn't as harsh? I don't remember a mass shooting where the suspect was "recycled right back out" ...

I'm thinking of the 12000 (annual) others.

i don't get it.

Now THAT is funny! Could you imagine some of the keyboard heroes from this board going up against the type of weaponry and manpower that was displayed last week in Boston? The laundrymats would be overflowing with people trying to wash the stains off their soiled undies.

And that was just law enforcement. They didn't even bother to bring out the big guns!

Yeah, saw that. Very intimidating. Hundreds and hundreds of them with all types of weaponry and firepower.

All for (2) measly-a$$ armed criminals.

You were laughing about what?

The funniest is the "armed citizens" who think they are a threat to government power.

So said our founders anyway. So yeah. Funny.

i don't get it.

Glad we agree. It's hilarious. :) Not like times have changed or anything... I'm sure it's totally plausible that one day all the armed citizens will overthrow our tyrannical government. Any day now.

You think going musket to musket with the red coats is similar to fighting back a mechnized us military force with your assault rifle?

It will be a fair match, unless the military folks have the numbers, and start breaking out a few of the toys the civilians don't have. Initially, the rifles carried by the troops will have the full auto feature locked out. Where they will beat the civilian militia will be with numbers, discipline and tactics, better communication, better body armor, and access to food, water, and a secure place to retire. Where the civilians will have an advantage, at least initially, will be picking where and when to engage, better knowledge of the terrain, and the ability to fade back into the population, at least in the beginning. Sooner, or later, folks will lead the authorities to where the nutters are hiding, in exchange for having the power, water, and cable turned back on, and the super markets restocked with Cheetos and Coca-cola.

Glad we agree. It's hilarious. :) Not like times have changed or anything... I'm sure it's totally plausible that one day all the armed citizens will overthrow our tyrannical government. Any day now.

In a sense, they already have. The NRA has been holding Congress hostage for years.

Lets just say this....

If the government of the US in the future gets to the point that it wants to bomb its own civilians and kill innocent civilians, I think most people in this forum will agree we need to fight back.

Not the liberals. I just found it interesting that 2 people shut down an entire city and used up so much manpower If this went on for a few more days there would be no LEO'S around. Some were on the job 25-30 hours with little rest. .

The liberal elite ... know that the people simply cannot be trusted; that they are incapable of just and fair self-government; that left to their own devices, their society will be racist, sexist, homophobic, and inequitable -- and the liberal elite know how to fix things. They are going to help us live the good and just life, even if they have to lie to us and force us to do it. And they detest those who stand in their way."

It depends whether they are really all that innocent. Sometimes folks just resist what is good for them, based on some misguided principle. I have experienced being on many teams over my lifetime, and I like being on the winning team. Losing sucks, so in your hypothetical, I would pick the team with the most firepower. Like I tell the libs all the time, when you stand on the fringe, there really isn't that many people standing behind you.

If conservatives are so worried about their government via the military, why do they whine anytime military spending is cut.

:thumbs::lol:

I am a cheap hawk, and an isolationist when it comes to regional problems in the world. I believe the military just needs enough firepower to go anywhere it wants to, however, I can't think of any reason why they really need to go there in the first place.
