with christians the issue is stupidity. with muslims the issue is evil. ?

and if we are going to tally the total number of dead, from each respective religion, how far back are we going? i'm sure you know both ideologies have had their fair share of bloodshed.

I just read an article about this:

Sikh-American activist and film-maker Valarie Kaur pointed out another example of the double-standard that Sirota described. “Let’s remember that the Oak Creek mass shooting was actually the last incident of domestic terrorism in this country,” she said. “It was committed by a white supremacist who walked into a Sikh house of worship. We did not hear calls for white people to be profiled, we did not hear Christianity denigrated, or Christians living in fear. The way that our country diagnoses a problem when it’s a white perpetrator, it’s an individual problem.”

Professor Michael Eric Dyson summed it up best, saying that “This is what it means to be black in America, as well as many other religious minorities. The evil stuff, the bad stuff we do is seen as representative. The great stuff we do is seen as exceptional. The exceptional people can never be representative of the group, and the evil people are the only representatives, or the people who do bad things are the only representatives. White Americans don’t — if Tom Cruise goes down, you got Brad Pitt. If Denzel goes down, we’re done.”

“Hate is too great a burden to bear. It injures the hater more than it injures the hated.” – Coretta Scott King

"Oppressive language does more than represent violence; it is violence; does more than represent the limits of knowledge; it limits knowledge." -Toni Morrison

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it.

We're more likely to be a victim of Angry White Guy violence than any attack by pseudo Muslims.

And for this particular attack, the Boston Marathon bombings, the dead and wounded were victims of Angry White Muslim Guys. How prejudiced of you to viciously lump all of us diverse White Guys into your hate filled crusade against White Guys!

(Yes Virginia, that is sarcasm!)

our president, the majority of our government, military, and population identify as christian.

if we apply the standard explained above equally, all of the people we've killed overseas in the past ten years, all the innocent civilians, all the 'oops was that a school we just obliterated?', all the legitimate, targeted kills..were killed in the name of christianity.

that probably isn't a very popular opinion in the u.s., but see where that might be a popular perception to foreigners. the double standard in the u.s. is so completely obvious - even more so to people who do not claim either religion.

I think people will always do whatever it takes mentally to distance themselves from and explain the actions of the "bad guys." Therefore if the majority of Americans are white Christians, they will always point to something that makes the bad guys different. These guys were pretty much white, so Islam is a good differentiation. If they were Christian but african american...... .well you know. If they were white and christian, then they were "crazy" or part of a religious cult that is completely different from their religious affiliation. This one's really easy to do because the guys actually admitted it was in the name of Islam. So...... its an easy way for the majority of American to "understand" the entire motive and situation. Granted, I think all humans do this to an extent and you're going to hear what makes the majority feel better in any country.

But we won't. Just like the aritcle points out, we have a very different perception of folks due to the color or their skin or their religion. Remember folks were already saying it was a "dark skinned person" that caused the attacks, the SA kid who was tackled for no reason other than running away from the blasts just like everyone else, or the fact that maybe if folks would have paid more attention to the the two white guys with 20lbs backpacks who placed them down and left them unattended, this might have been averted. The second we found out they were white, folks honed in on the Muslim aspect and argue they can't be white americans.

Actually, they were white. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev:Born in Kyrgyzstan, Dzhokhar (also spelled Djokhar) Tsarnaev emigrated with his family to the United States when he was 8 years old. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen on September 11, 2012.He graduated from the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. He was an avid wrestler, captain of his high-school wrestling team, and a Greater Boston League Winter All-Star. During high school, he sometimes worked as a lifeguard at Harvard University. He graduated from high school in 2011.[22] That year, the City of Cambridge awarded him a $2,500 scholarship.[29] His brother's boxing coach, who had not seen them in a few years at the time of the bombings, said that "the young brother was like a puppy dog, following his older brother". This guy was a naturalized US citizen.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev:Tamerlan Tsarnaev was born in the Russian SFSR, in the Soviet Union, and was a Russian citizen. He also became a permanent resident of the U.S. At some point he applied for U.S. citizenship, but Homeland Security held up its being granted to him because of a record of a 2011 FBI interview of him.

It's a side effect of the privilige most non minority people in the US feel.

Perpetual victimhood is a wonderful thing.

It's not about being a victim, it's the notion that white folks can't committ horrible crimes. Because trust and believe if those two were more "Muslim looking"(meaning middle eastern) or even of a darker shade, folks would have taken notice in a heartbeat.

How do you know that?

I think I'll convert to an oppressed religion, since I can't really change my race. Then when something bad happens to me, I can go running around blaming it on the way people treat me because of my religion. Seems like a good way to avoid personal responsibility or avoid facing facts.

According to Marvin, these guys would've been noticed in a heartbeat if they were the "wrong" color.

No one is trying to cut the bombers a break. No one. It's about them and them alone being responsible for their acts and not shoving every other Muslim under the bus along with those two POS.

Doesn't get more American than that.

Yeah I said they were pretty much white. The older brother was a little dark but we won't split hairs here. Once people found out it they were Muslim, this was an open and shut case. Granted that DID happen to be why they did it, that shouldn't mean that everyone that practices Islam should be thrown under that same blanket.

People want to know why, so they can go on with their merry life. What happened in Aurora..... lets see what color is he? White? Oh..., ok what about his mental health? Yep, crazy knew it...... Next. Newtown? Oh he was a white American? Hmmmmm? History of social issues? Got it, crazy.... next. Boston Marathon? What color was he? White? Damn..... What about religion? Muslim? Got it, next. I should note that people don't even care to delve into this guys mental status because they're ok with Islam as the reason.

There can be more than one bad thing happening in the world at any given time. The horrific nature of the bombing unfortunately also gave way to a lot of stupid, ignorant and unhelpful responses. It's ok to talk about those things in addition to the bombing.
