Hi there,

I am new to this so please bare with me here. My father is a U.S citizen, and I am 22, unmarried, currently enrolled in university in the U.S (I have the F-1 visa, i-20 form). We are filing for the i-130 form, but we don't know if we are supposed to wait for approval before filing for i-485 (adjustment of status) or if we should file both forms at the same time.

Realistically speaking, how long do you think it would take for me to get a visa number?

Many thanks,

Patricia

He just files the I-130 for now. You MUST stay in status at all times, it will take about 7 years for your priority date to become current, or 11 years if you marry (http://travel.state.gov/visa/bulletin/bulletin_5927.html). Once the priority date is current, if you are still legally in the USA, you can file adjustment of status.
