Hi All,

Of all the things we did in preparation for the melding of our two families, my wife's getting a PI drivers license after graduating from driving school was the best money spent of all. Once she arrived in the US, she was by CA law had the freedom to motor around after passing the written test. She earned a 1 year license in which she had to pass the driven skills test to get a CA DL. This gave her much time to get practice on highways at traffic speed and to, in general , gain confidence.

She was a safe driver but now she's a good-safe driver and I can honestly say I wouldn't have a problem dozing (sleeping) while she drove. Also have a good deal in our insurance Co. as many penalized her for not being from the states as a new driver. Allstate doesn't do this to us as my old companies would have. Insuring a "new driver" is quite expensive. Just some words of experience from us. Elsa even said for me to post this bit of information even if you have rapid transit, a car is invaluable.

Best of Luck!!

Bob

Yup a DL is a big step forward for sure here in the States. Amy had never drove before arriving here, after she got her EAC she went to DMV, took the written test and got her permit, then she started learning to drive in a full sized double cab PU with an 8' box. yup its big! And she parallel parks its easily. Few months after I started teaching her to drive she got her DL, its validity is tied to the date on her conditional green card so she will have to renew it next year.
