My wife's new surname is now "Sr."

Okay strange and unusual question...Especially for my first forum post.

QUESTION BACKGROUND

My wife and I were recently married in Georgia. She took my surname and Georgia insisted on giving her the "SR" suffix as well since it was on our wedding documents which were taken from my passport which also has no place for suffix. So now she is JANE "DOE SR" and I am about to file the I-130.

QUESTION

For all of my documents do I need to write (FAMILY NAME: DOE SR, FIRST: JANE, MIDDLE: NONE)?

Or can I write (FAMILY NAME: DOE, FIRST: JANE, MIDDLE: NONE)

Can I change it when she gets to the States?

I mean obviously it's a suffix, but Georgia was very strict about it.

I just want to know how strict the US is going to be about it if it is now on all of her documents!

At first it was funny, but now it's a pain in the US"SR"!

Do NOT put "none" as her middle name. Either put a line through it, or write n/a. Some people have had trouble writing "none" as they thought it was a middle name.

I have has to deal with the no middle name thing for a while as my father has no middle name. Generally on all US government forms you put "NMN" or "NMI".

I didn't know that. My husband has no middle name, so we did what my no-middle-name father always did and just put a stroke through the field (that is we'd write ------- in place of any information). So far it has been understood. On the DS-230, where it explicitly says to put N/A if something is not applicable, we did in fact put N/A.

I'm a dual US/Hungarian citizen (both by birth; Hungarian citizenship verification TBA), and my husband is a dual British/Irish citizen (by treaty) from Northern Ireland. We are atheists.

Thank you all for your responses. I didn't even think about "none" vs. "N/A". So definitely N/A for middle name, but my real issue is the "SR". Should I include it since it will be on all of her Georgian documents now?

What name is on her passport? That is the name to use. I would leave the SR off.

December 15, 2012: POE Atlanta....................became USC July 2016!!!!

Correct her surname changed as part of the marriage.

Now on her passport is "BANKS SR".

We argued with Justice Hall that my surname is just "BANKS" and that "SR" is a suffix but they were insistent.

Do you think I would run into any problems if I just put BANKS (without the SR) on the i-130 and other applications?

She will be getting her police report and other documents from her country and they will have "BANKS SR" on them.

In my opinion the embassy will interpret it as a suffix when they see it on the passport as they know what your name (her husband) is.

I would go that way and leave it off the documents and see how it turns out.

Hi, i had the similar problem, I'm in Kazakhstan former the USSR, so most people who register marriages base on your name on passport, they don't understand junior or senior meaning. I'm A**** P***jr(junior) like my hubby, so when we hired the attorney, she filled out all documents with JR, she said when i arrive to the states and have my new ID, jr will be removed anyway
