Like most Tennesseans, Remziya Suleyman was outraged at the news of the terrorist bombing at the Boston Marathon this week.

She’s been watching the news since, worried about the victims as well as her friends who live in that city.

“It’s a horrible moment for all of us in America,” she said.

Suleyman is director of policy and administration for the Nashville-based American Center for Outreach, which does political advocacy for Muslims in Tennessee.

She heard this morning that the suspects are from Chechnya and condemned them as terrorists.

She said that there’s no justification for their actions. No religion or political belief justifies this kind of violence, she said.

Many people in Chechnya are Muslims. She said she doesn’t know if the suspects claimed that faith — but their actions would disqualify them from her religion.

“In no way would I consider them to be Muslims,” she said.

Suleyman, who is active in social media, has been tweeting updates about the news from Boston. In the tweets, she said she hoped that the second suspect would soon be arrested and that her friends in Boston would be safe.

“This is a frightening moment for all of us,” she said.

I had some sense that he stepped away from the boys' lives about 2 years ago. I don't know why I get that sense, but it is what it is. IIRC, traditionally, he was supposed to 'take over' their welfare and well-being since their father wasn't in the USA.

I dunno, going by what he said on TV, he seems a stand-up fella. I make a posit - something happened with the kids, 2 years ago, and the Uncle refused to take care of their wellbeing. Lets see what turns up later in the week.

The Qur'an describes Jihad as a system of checks and balances, as a way that Allah set up to "check one people by means of another." When one person or group transgresses their limits and violates the rights of others, Muslims have the right and the duty to "check" them and bring them back into line. There are several verses of the Qur'an that describe jihad in this manner. One example:

"And did not Allah check one set of people by means of another,

the earth would indeed be full of mischief;

but Allah is full of Bounty to all the worlds"

Islam never tolerates unprovoked aggression from its own side; Muslims are commanded in the Qur'an not to begin hostilities, embark on any act of aggression, violate the rights of others, or harm the innocent. Even hurting or destroying animals or trees is forbidden. War is waged only to defend the religious community against oppression and persecution, because the Qur'an says that "persecution is worse than slaughter" and "let there be no hostility except to those who practice oppression" (Qur'an 2:190-193). Therefore, if non-Muslims are peaceful or indifferent to Islam, there is no justified reason to declare war on them.

Guess those bombers weren't doing this, which means they weren't doing a Jihad, guess you only want to see it that way.
