Why not incentivize getting un- and under-employed Americans to work the jobs, rather than perpetuating the exploitation of illegal immigrant labour?

i dunno. maybe ask the people that do the hiring?

Why not start with unemployment benefits which mean that people can make more money out of work than they can working?

Why not structure benefits so that working will never leave someone out of pocket, when compared to not working?

Don't interrupt me when I'm talking to myself

Says the person with a Canadian flag next to their name who could go back and forth to the U.S. on a whim, while the rest of us are separated from our family members for a year or more.

This doesn't sound bitter at all. Nope. Sweet as a cherry.

'Cause you can't get votes that way.

I say just deportation. Why spend taxpayer money feeding them?

Ok. Maybe the first time they get caught. Second time, prison. They can work in prison factories to pay for their stay. Google Unicor.

nice.

money constraints and the fact that i have a kid in school and dealing with his parents' separation kept me from visiting whenever i chose. not that i don't consider my situation lucky, i most certainly do. but i didn't ask to fall in love with someone that required a visa, most people don't.

i have family that have had to deal with illegal immigration and children - nothing to do with canada. assume more, maybe?

I wasn't bitter until I see proposals like Amnesty. Now I am. They should fix the legal immigration system first before they even talk about the illegal immigration problem.

Because it can't be done. You'd have to enforce labor laws including in private contracts. We have learned this week that you can't control these type of transactions when it comes to transferring a firearm. What makes you think that you can control it when it comes to the transfer of labor? But even if you could, you have too many employers that will happily look the other way. Ask Nature Boy, he's one of them.

As long as they pay taxes, what's the downside? That's the biggest complaint people have. Illegals can't pay taxes (aside from sales tax when they buy things to survive). If they are legal, they can and have to pay taxes.

They can and, more importantly, are required to pay taxes on income earned in the US regardless of their immigration status. Working and not paying taxes only compounds their illegal activity.

Money constraints are a personal problem. I would've liked for my wife to visit, but a tourist visa is pretty much out of the question for someone with an I-130 pending, or in most cases for that matter.

Whilst I would like to agree with that, the illegal immigration problem raises more political and economical concerns. And they don't have to be exclusive - revamping legal processes could assist in solving some of the illegal immigration problems and concerns.

It can, but it won't.

And enforcing laws? Don't make me laugh. This whole situation has come about because successive administrations have abrogated their responsibility to do just that.
