I'm with you there. We should give them the benefit of a long prison stay, followed by deportation.

Let me give you some background on myself. I was born in the U.S., as were my parents. I'm legal. I don't have any connections to any illegals, and I'm not fighting for anyone in particular on this.

What I do when I evaluate these sorts of situations is I put myself in other people's shoes. The big problem is misinformation in Mexico -- Mexicans think that if they go to the U.S., they can find a great job, make plenty of money, and support everyone. Mongolians think the same thing. Obviously, it's not the truth... most illegals don't make very much money in the U.S., at all.

But if you grow up hearing this, and you're sick and tired of not making enough money to feed your family... maybe you come from a poor background and didn't get enough of an education to apply for a visa. So, you go to the U.S., to pursue happiness.

If someone in this case is a person willing to work hard and make something of him/herself, he/she should be given the chance. People were able to do this in the early times, when immigration from Europe was easy.

If the government needs money, I would think people who are legal are more likely to pay taxes than those who aren't. If the illegals are made legal, they are more likely to contribute.

Put yourself in the shoes of these people. I think too many Americans think they are entitled just for being born in this country. I could care less where someone was born, or what background they come from. If they want to pursue happiness, I want to let them.

The more we exclude, the further from peace we are.

The hell with laws! Let's abandon all of them! Make crime pay!! Let's really bust everyone's balls who immigrates legally!! ANY person who has gone through the process legally should be appalled at amnesty. You know who you are. Shame on you.

No. Shame on anyone who thinks they have the right to shame others for having different thoughts and opinions other than "dep0rtAtion!11!!!!!" on something that is a heavily debated issue.

In these times of economic austerity, why incur the expense of a lengthy prison stay?

Or the cost of deportation? Why not collect taxes and fees instead?

As long as they pay taxes, what's the downside? That's the biggest complaint people have. Illegals can't pay taxes (aside from sales tax when they buy things to survive). If they are legal, they can and have to pay taxes. We were privileged enough to be born on a plot of land divided up by purely political boundaries - we did not earn anything by being born here. What is so hard about viewing illegal immigrant as people with the misfortune of being born outside of the lines? What is so hard about viewing them as people?

I don't support blind amnesty - money has to be accounted for. I don't support open border - we have to ensure there is not a mass flood of people that we can not financially or structurally support. But I feel like we have to stop viewing the immigration problem through means that dehumanize immigrants - illegal or otherwise - and work towards a solution that allows more opportunity for the population of this world.

when i hear people complaining about the fact that they went through the process the correct way and 'demand a refund' i think = bitter whiners.

we did things the right way and we have the security of that fact. others do not. doesn't mean they shouldn't have a path to citizenship. anyone here knows the paths to citizenship are very, very, limited.

Why not incentivize getting un- and under-employed Americans to work the jobs, rather than perpetuating the exploitation of illegal immigrant labour?

Sounds like you're suggesting we encourage people to work rather than make the same amount living off of government benefits. Tsk tsk.

(but really, I've been saying this for what feels like three lifetimes. Can't exactly blame somebody who doesn't want to take a menial job if they can make roughly the same amount doing nothing)
