Who said anything about suffering? It is about making an example of the rule of law. OH and in our case eliminate the repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat offenders.

The rule of law used to make an example out of someone won't deter everyone. It means that someone who isn't afraid to die can commit whatever crime, and have nothing to fear. In fact, based on a lot of these incidents, the criminal generally seems to prefer to die. Look at Columbine, Sandyhook, etc, etc.

I personally would much rather die than spend the remainder of my life doing nothing of value in prison, with no hope to get out. Luckily, I'm not a criminal, and don't plan on becoming one, so I don't have to make that choice.

As I have said before, crime in Saudi is nearly non-existant. It is deterred LOL.

Nothing like seeing a head rolling to give one pause.

With this in mind I am thinking of the 12000 annual murders where the perps are not worried about the consequences because the consequences are light, not the odd nut who snaps. A few will not ever be deterred, but the vast majority can and are deterred, in places where you are pushing up daisies within a few weeks of being caught and you don't get 2 strikes much less 3.

Who the hell said anything about prison? Remove the offending body part and let 'em go. They don't ever show back up to get a second body part removed.

Or if it's a violent crime hang 'em.

They don't cycle through 30-40 times that way.

You know, in Saudi Arabia, it is very, very rare that a hand actually gets chopped off. There are a lot of circumstances -- the stealing had to be pre-meditated, there had to be certain witness requirements, etc.

Cutting off someone's hand is a form of rehabilitation, and I don't necessarily disagree with it, if it works. I think that is one way. Another way is to get to the reason people behave a certain way, and try to help them change it before resorting to more extreme measures. Obviously there are people who are criminally insane and are beyond help, but for some people, specifically those who come from poor neighborhoods and don't see a better way, education can be very helpful.

I don't think it should be about revenge and punishment, anyway. I think it should be about peace and rehabilitation.

Lots o places on this planet obtain that through castration.

Bingo. Losing a hand is rare. Ya know why? Theft is rare. Ya know why? Because, among other things, there is the possibility of losing your friggin hand. Thus: Crime is deterred.

Speaking from the standpoint of our own poor neighborhoods I don't really see that the violent faction can be given a free education, even if free food is offered with it. What say you? Do you give education or does the recipient go to school and get one? Because if you offer it and someone refuses it and chooses a different path then what?

It does not appear that the average prisoner in prison is out to die. They go to great lengths to survive and based on studies there is no incentive or deterrance to prevent them from going right back in when they get out.

In one of the most comprehensive reports of its kind, the Pew Center on the States found that slightly more than four in 10 offenders return to prison within three years, a collective rate that has remained largely unchanged in years, despite huge increases in prison spending that now costs states $52 billion annually.

National recidivism, or return, rates are holding steady even as state officials have launched programs to help prisoners re-enter society and as the recent financial crisis has forced states to cut their budgets and re-evaluate the types of offenders who should return to prison.

News: The "magic programs" aren't working. We need to look around the world, see who has what and is doing what, find out what IS working, and apply it to our own criminal justice system.

The US is not going to bomb Chechnya or k-stan over this.

No... they'll probably figure out a way to use this to start a drone war with an unrelated country with lots of natural resources, taking out hundreds of innocent children along the way.

Alas, neither brother was from Chechnya... They were both from Russia and the younger one, who is in custody, is an American.
