My wife checked the mail today and called me to let me know that we received our NOA1 for both her AOS and EAD. By the looks of it we should be receiving a biometrics appointment letter next. But one little question...is it common for USCIS to use only an initial for her middle name?? I'm pretty sure when I filled out the forms I put her whole middle name. Second question. Can one still receive RFE's after this stage?

Yes, they use the middle initial.

Yes, you can receive an RFE at anytime, even at the interview, if you have one. You just got your receipt notice and have not even done biometrics yet. No one has even looked at your case to process it yet.
