My husband and I had many discussions over this before we came to a decision. He wants me to convert to Islam, and I will be doing this when he comes and can help me with the prayer. BUT Christmas to me is and always has been more related to family togetherness. My family is all Christian, and I am proud that I have raised children to have a mind of their own, to choose what they want in life, and to accept others choices.

I am the hub of the Christmas tradition in my home. If I was not to celebrate my family would be devastated. My husband is a practicing Muslim, so this needed to be discussed completely.

What we are doing is keeping with my traditions of a Christmas celebration. There will be no religious items such as the nativity scenes, or Jesus, or anything. Of course many of the basic Christmas decorations are symbolic, but once I stressed to my husband that these are now, and always have been nothing more than a family celebration he was accepting. This was not an easy task, but too important to both of us to ignore. I have given on some things, he has given on some things, but this was not an option for me, and I am glad he took the time to understand what is in my heart on making this decision.

Now for all of the Islamic celebrations, we will be celebrating those as well. How can I expect him to celebrate Christmas if I wasn't willing to celebrate his traditions as well? This is a marriage, not an ownership.

Would I be upset if he wanted to celebrate Eid but not Chrstimas? YES! This is a huge part of my life. I am glad that we were able to work out a solution.

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

um i recommend an artificial provided you have the room to store it throughout the year. when i was a kid, i remember us having the same tree for over a decade and it fits into my "green"side (yeah many didn't know i had one i bet  ). i refrain from having a real tree as i feel it is a waste to cut down a perfectly good tree just for the benefit of one month. some countries do sell trees that are dug up (roots packed in a big bag) so the tree can be replanted after christmas is over

i think that's a great idea so we are not filling up our landfills with trees.

Christmas trees are nothing to do with christianity. They stem from paganism.

And I agree with Charles. Buy a tree with roots and plant it outside afterwards. BUT, only bring it in for a couple of days. Trees go into hibernation mode in the winter, bring them inside for too long and they will think it is summer.

That's why so many die after being planted outside after Christmas. They have come out of hibernation mode whilst indoors and then are shoved back outside into below freezing weather....

I'm a Christian and celebrated Ramadan this year as solidarity with my fiance and his family who are not with me, and for some of the other reasons mentioned in the article Bosco referenced. It was a beautiful time and had benefits I did not expect (weight loss was not one of them  ). The fast does not conflict with my religion at all. I will celebrate Christmas because it is sacred to me. I will support whatever my fiance chooses to do; I think he will celebrate it as a secular holiday, but when the time comes, if he finds that conflicts with his beliefs, I won't expect or want him to celebrate it. It's not a trade for us, "I'll do this if you do this." He supports my faith journey and I support his.

We used to have a fake white tree with gawd awful blue lights and I think by year 17 the thing was so dirty you couldn't tell that it used to be white.

I started using a fake tree once I got divorced because I couldn't deal with hauling it in and out myself never mind the mess of vacuuming up the fallen needles. I bought a nice fiber optic tree about three years ago and I love it 'cause I don't have to deal with stringing the lights. (i love that song with the guy bitchin' about the lights lol) I used to miss the smell of a fresh tree but now I just get a yankee candle like the Christmas Eve one and it has a whole bunch of nostalgic scents rolled up in to one. :luv:

Abdel and I haven't decided yet if we will put up the tree. We actually have a large artificial one and a small one. I'm taking off the rest of the year after December 15th to work in the house - this year it's painting my oldest son's room and bathroom - so we don't know if we'll feel like or have time to deal with the mess of getting 6 huge boxes of stuff out of the attic, putting it up, then taking it down a few weeks later.

Abdel's family does celebrate Christmas, and we will celebrate with my family here. I was willing to try to observe Ramadan with him if he wanted to this year, but his job is extremely physical, and I work and go to school, so he felt that we didn't need the added stress in our lives right now. Maybe next year, who knows.

I am christian and my husband is muslim he will participate in the holiday but not in the religious way. He'll take me to church and wait for me to call him when it's done. Hopefully we'll be celebrating christmas in our new house. We are psyched about that because he wants to buy a tree(artificial) I don't like the pine needles on the carpet and decorate it and put up lights on the outside. So I am looking forward to this christmas a lot because we'll be in our own house.

I am christian and my husband is muslim also like many here. Im just hoping my husband is here by Christmas so we can celebrate it together. For us and he knows this its a time of the year more about family togetherness and fun rather then relgion. But this is just my opion and view on it.

I have used artificial trees in the past, they look really nice. I used to buy pine scented candles and light them in the same room as the tree. Most people thought the tree was real. :star:
