My wife will receive her green card in the mail today (thank God).

I'm just curious some of you have have had it, I'm wondering the following,

In general, let's say we now wanted to go to Europe. Will she be required to get a visa a Filipino Citizen, or will she be considered an 'American' for purposes of travel. For instance, I can go to Europe and enter on a temporary visa no problem. Will she be able to? If not, will it be easier for her to get a travel visa as a GC holder, or will it be the same as it was when she living in Philippines.

Just curious if anyone has direct experience with that.

I know she can now travel back and forth to Canada. But I wasn't sure about other places.

I think with her GC she can travel to Europe without needing a visa, I think its the same as with Canada. Nope I don't know for fact. Just know that my wife can travel to Canada without issue which is on our serious list.

She'll need a Schengen visa for Europe (depending on the country to be visited).

The Schengen allows member citizens of the countries. But she's still a citizen of the philippines, not the US. So I don't think the GC works the same as an American Passport, that's what I'm trying to figure out. I expect getting a visa will be much easier for her as a GC holder, but I'm not sure she's automatically afforded the same rights as an actual US citizen.

Need to research some more.

Yeah I will. This seems to confirm what I thought. In general, she'll still need visas, I just expect as a GC Holder and married to a USC, it will be much easier to get them. For instance, as a single Filipina, she'd never ever get a visa as tourist to Japan, but hopefully now if we want to go there we'll be able to.

This sort of explains it:

Because your wife is a citizen of the Philippines, she'll need to get a Schengen visa to visit the Schengen countries. Also, she'll need the appropriate visas to visit non-Schengen countries in Europe.

You won't need a visa.

Since your wife is a green card holder, is married to a U.S. citizen, and would be interviewing at a European consulate located in the U.S., my guess is that she would have no problem getting a Schengen visa.

For more information on a Schengen visa, check with the consulate which has jurisdiction over where you live. The consulate which would issue your wife a Schengen visa would either be the country where she would be spending most of her vacation or, if she were spending equal time in more than one Schengen country, the consulate of her POE.

Bon voyage! :star:
