I finished my medical exam yesterday (received my vaccinations) and I was given my passport back. They took 2 of my passport-style photos. I asked why, and the lady at the releasing counter told me that SLEC no longer keep passports and they instead just forward the results to the embassy. I was told to bring my passport during my interview. I also noticed that there are instructions posted all over SLEC reminding applicants that they should have their passports with them before leaving any counter - including the releasing counter.

As to why they kept your fiancee's passport, I am not sure why. But I don't think it would be a problem since SLEC would most likely forward it to the USEM along with her medical records. :) Just tell your fiance to bring her son's passport during the interview as suggested by Hank. :)

Could it be possible that SLEC either keep it or return it to the applicant depending on the time interval between the medical and the interview? Like if the interview is less than a week from the time of the medical, SLEC would keep the passport and froward it to the embassy? And return it to the applicant if the interview is more than a week away?

The Embassy info appears to be outdated. In our day, St. Lukes would keep everyone's passport and forward them to the Embassy. This policy changed a couple of years ago. The only exception to the old policy was when someone had their interview in the next day or two. In those cases, you could tell St. Lukes about it and they would allow you to get your passport back after completing the medical.

That doesn't answer the question of why St. Lukes kept your fiancée's passport. During the past couple of years, I haven't heard of them doing that. However, I'm guessing that her passport will be at the Embassy when she has her interview. I'd still be curious to find out why they kept it. Maybe you should ask them.
