Hi all,

UK beneficiary here with some questions regarding the applying for Social Security Number part of the K1 process:

The SSN step by step guide says to wait two weeks before you enter the US before applying for an SSN - do I need to have an SSN to get a marriage

certificate and then get married? Just concerned because it means waiting these 2 weeks and then another 2 weeks for the SSN to arrive in the mail

means waiting at least a month after arriving before the US before I can even get married.

We will be getting married in Maryland so I'm wondering if it's on a state-by-state basis and if anyone knows where I can check, google searches so

far have proven unfruitful.

This is not a K-1 process or procedure, moved to social security forums.

You should be checking your county clerk or county court website, it is better to call them for information tho.

Your I-129f was approved in 5 days from your NOA1 date.

Your interview took 67 days from your I-129F NOA1 date.

AOS was approved in 2 months and 8 days without interview.

ROC was approved in 3 months and 2 days without interview.

After 2 weeks of arrival, apply for the SSN.

Go back to the SSA office next day and bring the letter they gave you and the identification you provided. You can ask to have your SSN printed out and get your number without waiting for the card in the mail.

Most states require SSN to get marriage license. Check/download the form from the state website.

The waiting a couple weeks of after you enter the US is to make sure your info is updated in the data system when you go to apply. You do not need the SSN to get a marriage license. Let them know he does not have an SSN yet. They will use something else, such as his passport. You can call your local court where you will get the license from and ask about your situation. They will let you know the procedure for your state and county,

Also, once you apply for the SSN, you do not have to wait until you receive the card to get your number. If they tell you it is all good and you will be receiving your card in the mail soon, then you can usually go back the next day and they can give you the number before your card ever arrives, if you need it for something before the 7-10 days it takes to turn up in your mailbox.

No they don't. SSN is listed as a requirement, but it is only required if you have an SSN. Lots of people travel from other countries for destination weddings and get married in the US. They do not have or need an SSN to be married.

As others have said, check with the county in which you plan to get married. I don't know which county that is, but with a quick google search, I found the following information on the Prince George's County Website

*The license application provides for the mandatory disclosure of Social Security numbers of both parties. Social Security numbers are required by law and will not print on the marriage application. If applicant is a foreign national and does not have a social security number, the applicant must be present and sign an affidavit.

Thanks so much it will be Prince George's County where we get married so realising i don't need the SSN is a huge comfort thanks
