(Reuters) - Hundreds of people were likely injured on Wednesday in an explosion at a fertilizer plant, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety told Reuters.

The spokesman, D.L. Wilson, added that a nearby nursing home collapsed from the blast and that people were believed to be trapped inside.

DEVELOPING: Emergency crews in Texas are responding to two large explosions at a fertilizer plant in the town of West, near Waco, authorities say.

Gayle Scarbrough, a spokeswoman for the Department of Public Safety in Waco, told television station KWTX that DPS troopers have been transporting the injured to hospitals in their patrol cars. She says six helicopters were also en route.

The blast at West Fertilizer plant, reported shortly before 8 p.m. CT, was confirmed by Waco police dispatch operators.

First responders are dealing with numerous injuries and major damage to structures and vehicles, Scarbrough said.

Several buildings, some in residential areas, were reported to be burning, others destroyed, and a nearby nursing home was damaged, according to a report from KWTX.

Initial reports say people are trapped in a nearby nursing home and an apartment building.

A local school football field is being setup as a staging area.

According to scanner traffic, authorities are trying to block drivers from coming into town and evacuations are underway, FOX17 reports.

it's right on i-35 - it was a good fuel stop for me as it had a dq next to the cheapest gas for 40 miles

Horrible story... saw some distant shots of the medical efforts on the late news tonight. Homes near the plant were completely leveled, and a lady 11 blocks away said that pictures were knocked off her walls by the force of the explosion.

(Organizer hat on) Edited to add: When the cause of the blast becomes known, this thread could remain in P&R (terrorists, etc.) or be moved to Off Topic (news story about an industrial accident).

Next time you in that area try out the bakery, its really nice.
