Senate rejects expanded gun background checks

In a major defeat for supporters of tougher gun laws, the U.S. Senate on Wednesday defeated a compromise plan to expand background checks on firearms sales as well as a proposal to ban some semi-automatic weapons modeled after military assault weapons.

The votes were on a series of amendments to a broad package of gun laws pushed by President Barack Obama and Democratic leaders in the aftermath of the Newtown school massacre in December.

However, fierce opposition by the powerful National Rifle Association led a backlash by conservative Republicans and a few Democrats from pro-gun states that doomed key proposals in the gun package, even after they had been watered down to try to satisfy opponents.

After the votes, Obama angrily criticized the NRA and senators who voted against the expanded background checks for rejecting a compromise he said was supported by a strong majority of Americans.

Interesting, too, how the same minority of Senators that reject universal background checks for gun purchases support universal background checks for employment (a.k.a. mandatory e-verify). That makes sense because we know that law breakers will follow the law when it comes to verifying employment eligibility but not when it comes to the purchase of a firearms. Hypocrites. All of them.

And those are the same representatives who supported voter ID laws. They hate America.

I don't think they are hypocrites, so much as I blame it on inbreeding.

idk if its accurate or not & i don't care.

comparing a law that protects employment opportunities for citizens & legal residents to a feel good do not a damn thing law involving a seperate issue is hilarious & a clear display of butthurt or sour grapes. you pick which you like best.

The comparison was not between the two laws. The comment was made about the hypocrisy of those who voted in favor of one and against the other, for the same reasons. It was directed at the representatives, rather than to the verbiage of the proposed law itself.

There is no constitutional right to employment.
