Questions about Paperwork for AOS Interview

Hello everyone,

We have our AOS interview next Tuesday and I've been putting together paperwork based on the notification that USCIS sent us and what it tells us to bring. Our AOS is from a K1 visa. I have a few questions about the paperwork it asks for and am hoping some of you might know the answers to put my mind at ease.

Q: It says to bring the petitioner's birth certificate and evidence of US citizenship or permanent residency. Isn't a US birth certificate the same thing as proof of US citizenship or do we need to bring something else in addition to that?

Q: It says they want an original and copy of each document submitted. Which documents are they talking about? I made a copy of the AOS packet before we mailed that in. Is that enough? Or are they wanting 2 copies of everything we bring to the interview and not just the copy of the packet we made? Ugh so much paper.

Q: We already submitted Form I-864 with the AOS application. Do we still need extra copies of it?

Q: RE: Form I-864: Do we need pay stubs from the last 2 months or do the 'last 2 months' when we submitted the AOS application count as good enough?

Q: Health insurance: Is a copy of both of our insurance cards ok (I have insurance through my husband's job), or do we need more proof that we are on the same plan and if so what are they looking for?

Q: What does "all documentation establishing eligiblity for lawful permanent resident status" mean? Isn't that just referring to everything else on the list? Except it is listed as something separate to bring in addition to all the other items.

And a random Q: Is it important to have our car registered in both names? It costs money to do so, so we were wondering what the benefit of doing that was. We have other evidence of co-mingling of assets and probably don't need that one.

Thanks in advance for any and all help!!!

Ok, so going to answer some of my own questions. As far as evidence of citizenship for the sponsor, I brought an original and copy of my husband's birth certificate and nothing else- and when we offered the birth certificate the officer said he already had a copy and didn't need it. So we didn't end up needing anything but I am still glad we took it since it's on the required list.

As far as original and copy - he kept asking what we had for him and if we handed it for him he was just going to keep it and add it to the file. Thankfully I had copied all of the evidence we brought, although I threw in our ultrasound the last minute and when he asked if he could have that I was like, "Um..if you have to but I'd like to keep it...but if you have to I guess" and he offered to make a copy of it for me (and did, thankfully) so we got to keep the original. So long story short, if you bring something to the interview as proof of your marriage, make sure you are okay with giving the item to the officer and if not make sure you have a copy of it.

Speaking of which, I don't know if you can bring too much. In our interview, he started asking us about the exact dates and times we had first met each other in person and we knew the first one for sure but after that the dates were kind of a blur and we started fumbling around trying to guess until my husband remembered we had a copy of our original K1 visa package we had sent in with a list of the dates we had met each other. So I took that out and gave it to him and that was good enough. Although now I think I am going to print out another copy of that so my K1 package copy is complete again. Did not expect that amount of info requested!!!

Regarding the two questions about Form I-864 - we had brought recent copies of tax returns from 2012 since we just had them and the most recent 2 months of pay stubs but when we offered them he declined saying he already had what he needed for Form I-864. So I guess if you submit it in the original AOS application you don't need to bring updated information to the interview.

For health insurance, we ended up bringing a copy of the form my husband used to add me on to his health insurance, a copy of both our health insurance cards which show the same group number, and I printed out a copy of the summary from my last visit (it was a prenatal visit to substantiate the ultrasound). That seemed to be enough for him. He basically just took the papers we had without looking at them or inspecting them in any detail, wrote down 'joint health insurance' and then asked for what else we had to give him.

Regarding the 'documentation for eligibility of permanent resident status' - I wasn't sure what it meant so I photocopied my K1 visa and I-94 (as well as bringing the originals in) to show I had entered legally and was eligible to adjust status. He didn't ask specifically for this information but I noticed he did take out the I-94 from my passport and add it to his application.

As far as the car ownership thing, he didn't ask about it (we submitted joint car insurance paperwork), but I will probably get it done by the time we do removal of conditions to add as another proof of joint assets.

Hope this information is of some help to someone!
