Vacation in the US right after interview

My husband and I have booked a vacation to the US in July, and we just got our second letter in the DV lottery confirming an interview in June. So naturally we are worried about how that will affect our vacation.

Do they take our passports at the interview and return them later with the visa?

If thats the case, how long does that take?

Or can we take our passports with us home?

If we are granted the green cards and go on our vacation, do we activate them then?

And is the chance of getting the green cards smaller when DV-2013 is coming to an end (as mentioned, our interview is in June..)?

How much time do you usually get from the time you are issued the DV visa until you have to move to the US?

I am sorry about all the questions, but I'll be so grateful for some answers :-)

We are both from Norway and entered the DV lottery for the fiscal year of 2013, and got our first letter in the second drawing (October 2012) and our second letter now in April with an interview date in the beginning of June. We go on our vacation in the beginning of July.

Thank you for answering!

I would call the embassy and ask them. I have heard of people visiting the US without "activating" their visas at that time, but I would rather reschedule the interview for after your vacation to be sure. The interviews are held until September 30th if I am not mistaken, so end of July/August should be perfectly fine.
