I just broke the news to my family that I'm in love with a woman abroad and intend on filing for a fiance visa. The were devastated and believe this ordeal will drain my finances and become an eventual burden on them. They are concerned that I am being victimized by someone who is either using me to obtain citizenship or a general romance scam. They also believe that my 6 month correspondence and 1 visit is not enough to file, and believe I will be denied and then drawn into a never ending appeal process that I will spend years paying for, just to face an inevitable visa refusal.

The facts about my relationship are we met online and she is one of the sweetest, most warm hearted souls you will ever meet who loves me the same as I love her. I told my family this decision is irreversible and that I have chosen the women that I will spend the rest of my life with.

Maybe I could get some encouraging words here and as this post fills up I will email them the link. Or maybe this post could help out someone else who is facing a similar problem with their family or is just struggling to make ends meet and concerned about the visa journey they are about to begin.

Hi There,

Families... I tell ya!

First of all, the only requirements for a fiance visa are that you are both free to marry and that you have met face to face, in person in the last 2 years. So your family stating you will be denied is not necessarily true. If you provide all the necessary forms and proof of your relationship you should be fine to move to the interview stage at the embassy. The process takes a good long time right now so you will have plenty of time to collect additional proof and make your case nice and strong.

Sure, there are unfortunately a lot of scams and frauds going on out there and a loving family would in fact be cautious. But there are also plenty of true, loving relationships too. All you can really do is prove it to them over time. Go through the process - yes, there is some cost to it - but if it is a straight forward case with no obvious issues it can easily be done without a lawyer and is not too bad overall(I managed without a lawyer and hubby was from a MENA country). Besides, to me there was no price to high to pay to get my husband here.

As for the time - it is a long process, but again worth it in the end.

I say to you.... CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Finding the woman of your dreams, your soul mate is no easy task and I am truly happy for you.

Read through all the helpful links here on the process, you will be just fine. Also learn the things to watch for as far as what could cause you any issues and address them if they come up!

Your family... will hopefully eventually come around.

Best of luck to you!! :star:

You will be going through a difficult consulate, so a second visit would definitely be a good idea. People have been approved with only one visit, but the more "face time" you have the better. In fact, what can help is when the families meet- so why not invite some of your family along next time you go (it can be after you started the process if you are in a hurry)? Let them get to know her and see how much you two are in love- and take photos!

Agree, more visits will help with approval chances. Our fiancée was denied, so we got married and during our interview (which by then was my third visit) the lady said we were probable denied due to the one visit. I agree the more face time the better for the interview and to determine if you are part of a scam.

*** Thread moved from K-1 Process forum to General Immigration Discussion -- topic is not specifically a K-1 process issue. ***

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
