Gay penguin book shakes up Ill. school

Promoting? #######? It is not a product. You can promote Snapple or Kellogs but you can't promote gay.

So is a story about a hetero family promoting heterosexuality? If so I want those books off the shelves.

I will bet you fiddy bucks that the 11 yr old girl who was brought up right knows what gay is.

It is funny how there are books about death and divorce in school libraries. Is that promoting death? Or divorce? Will those children grow up and die or get divorced? Maybe it is the books faults that the divorce rate is 50% and the death rate is 100%.

Gay is not a 4 letter word. I have told my children that some people love people of the opposite sex and some love people of the same sex. Nobody is more right or better than the other. Now watch them grow up and be gay because I told them that.

heres your fiddy bucks...... nah i wasnt saying that, i was mostly talking about sex anyway, but when talking about sex homosexuality usually comes up, atleast when i talk about it .

it usually starts out as " there are 2 ppl who love eachother, weather be man and woman or man and man or woman and woman" and usually i get "OH MOM PLS I DONT WANNA KNOW ABOUT THIS YET" but i go on anyway bc i thought it was better to inform her now bc i cant trust every little boy and girl she rides bikes with, especially when i dont know his parents. but yea,. when i say ive discussed sex with her, homosexuality was in there, i should have made that clear.

and just to clear the air, i have already had the sex talk with her, as of this yr, bc i as her parent found her ready. and she thinks its gross and even when she hears the word sex on tv she pretends to puke, and when ppl kiss on tv she pretends to puke, so yes i know shes not talking about it with anyone at all.

Ok, if a language problem has caused this discussion to get mixed up, I apologise if you felt I was slamming your relationship with your daughter. That was never my intention.

My objection was to the idea that if a child is brought up correctly they will have no interest in sex (child version thereof, not all the adult preoccupations) and moreover that any child who does have an interest in sex (age appropriate I will stress) is being brought up badly. Some kids will have more interest, some less.

I maintain that an interest in the normal workings of the human body is perfectly normal for even very young (5/6 yr old) children and questions pertaining to reproduction should be answered in a realistic way and not some cutesy mumbo jumbo. I always answer my kids questions when they come up and he has no unhealthy preoccupation with the subject.

I will have to read the book that sparked this discussion, if only to find out if it's worth all the controvesy...

I have come to the conclusion that what you (Ionescu) are saying is that if the subject of sex is handled appropriately then it doesn't become a fixation and children don't talk about more adult sexual ideas, they just carry on with kid things, which is more or less what I believe.

I could be wrong, but this is what I am reading into it now.

i didnt say anything about "handling sex talk appropriately" what i was saying is the school system trys to take the responsibility of that from the parents when they issue books like this. especially to YOUNG kids. i know in 1st grade i dont want the teacher explaining homosexuality to my 5-6 yr old when im more capable of doing it from home. thats what my point was all along at the start of this thread.

and it becomes a fixation depending on your kid. not weather or not the parent tells the sex talk right or wrong or tells them or not. again, my daughter is more involved in sports than knowing about sex, as i was, that dont make her abnormal, when she gets to that age where she wants to talk about it, she knows im open for discussion, but until then i love just listenining to her talk about the jello in school and how much she wants a pair of converse shoes. again i thank my stars that at this age shes not thinkin about sex.

When my son brings home such a book from the school library, I will make a decision based on reading the book. So far, all he brings home are books about robots and pokemon...

Ok, I'm totally confused on that remark.

let me put is SIMPLE

As a parent, the one who has been there during the REARING process - you can gauge when the appropriate time is to "educate" your children about alternative lifestyles, love and sex, etc.

I haven't read the book, BUT if it is only about 2 male penguines who love each other (heartily... not queerly) raising this baby penguin from an egg... well, the world revolves around LOVE in its purist form. All love is NOT sexual. With that said... IF it is promoting an alternative lifestyle choice... then I know for sure that I definitely want to be the one to explain that to Shonna, NOT for some school teacher, librarian, book-club or even his Sunday School Teacher to tell him... I AM THE PARENT... and unlike a lot of people who are parents, I do not slack off on the parenting job. I take my responsiblity as Shonnas care-giver, moral and ethical teacher very seriously.

I don't have frank sexual discussions with my son based on him asking me what poo is and where it comes from.

I don't have adult sexual discussions with him period, but I would answer honestly any quesitons he might pose.

I do not expect the education system to teach children morality or ethics. I don't expect their reading matter to be too limited either. I haven't read this book. Until I read this book I can't know what it's bounderies are but I do know there are books in the library for children that portray all kinds of previously taboo subjects, like single parent families. These are not dangerous to young children, they just expand their knowledge.
