Who said those particular events were Islamophobic? No one. None of those events have anything to do with the completely separate issue of certain FEMEN members showing up at these protests in the Arab/Muslim equivalent of "blackface". That's a crappy thing to do, regardless of anything else that has happened in Egypt, or Tunisia.

It's their freedom of expression and it's not up to you to judge them for it. They can go and stab or burn Christ effigies and that would be their freedom of expression, too. Might be distasteful, might be offensive - might just be meant to be offensive. They hate on religion all around, it's not like they singled your out. I mean, they don't get death threats from their majority religions and they are not expelled from their countries for expressing themselves. That happens only in certain parts of the world and they have a right to protest against that in a way they see fit as long as they don't hurt or harm another. They haven't done that. So why can't you just let them carry out their protest while you mind your own business?

They are not race baiting bitches. In fact, FEMEN has members all over the world. All races, all colors. You don't like them and that's okay. I don't really care one way or the other but I do believe that they ought to be able to carry out their protest, that they ought to be able to express themselves without some of them - those out of MENA - having to fear for their lives. THAT is what's crappy and wrong more than anything else. How would you like it to receive death threads for what you post on VJ or voice in any other setting? Think that'd be alright?

Moderation has defined it as "areola or more". That rule is very loosely enforced, however.

I wonder if male Areola would count..

What really wonder if , native nudity would be ok. You know like on TVthey can show full frontal native nudity, but can't show nipple.

I wonder if you post some Nat Geo nudtiy it would get nuked.

If I understand Africans running naked in a river is ok by US standards. Europeans nude on a beach is pornographic.

They did actually get in a whole lot of hot water in Russia recently. Several got sentenced to prison for their protests against Putin at a Russian Orthodox cathedral. The church asked the government to go easy on them but I guess the crime of insulting Putin was too much. Many people sympathized with them there but I don't recall any of it being referred to as Christianophobia (or whatever that term would be)! Most people recognize that their protests are often quite tasteless and I think even they might agree. The tastelessness helps them get that media attention. The boobs on display don't hurt there either. If they had criticized Putin with their clothes on and in an otherwise inoffensive way they would be free but also they would be unknown to the world.

Yes, I do that every day. That country is the USA. There's plenty of road rage to go around here. Anyway, are you seriously suggesting that the driving prohibition imposed on females in Saudi Arabia (there's no law to that effect, by the way) is to protect them from male road rage? Is that your argument here?

It's not mine.

How much discussion has been made here on this site about the effect of single parenting and fatherlessness on our society? The Saudis have implemented and enforce laws prohibiting mixing of single men and women to prevent this. It is felt there that allowing women to drive would also allow or encourage this mixing and this is the justification given to the King, who actually wishes to lift the ban, for not letting them do this.

i don't get it.

Well, I am not surprised that criticism of the czar gets them into trouble. Russia isn't exactly human rights central, is it?

Not sure why you'd think the question was directed at you. It wasn't. Unless you're sara...

That was extra input. The rules there have nothing to do with road rage. I'm qualified LOL. Still have a valid Saudi license.

I see. Women at liberty to operate a motor vehicle will lead to fatherless children. Okay. It's all coming together now...

Don't drone me over it dude. That's what the religious leaders told the King.

And the king bought that? They're all not very bright over there, are they?

Believe it or don't tinfoil man. That view reflects the view of the average person.

As a society they are otherwise better off in a lot of ways than we are. Who are the bright ones then?

I think it is horrible, and atrocious that anyone has received death threats or anything else prohibiting their ability to express themselves. It is very, very wrong that that has happened. Things had been said in another thread condemning that happening, but it disappeared.

That being said, oppression and other abuses women have suffered just for expressing themselves does not mean they've earned a debit card entitling them to engage in Arab/muslimface for Amina Tyler and not be called out for pulling that kind of #######. I would sincerely hope they would be called out if anyone came out in blackface protesting rape in the Congo, or had slanteyed face masks on to protest women's abuse in China. It's demeaning and oppressive to engage in the behavior some of them did. It's their right of course to engage in that kind of behavior. But it's not the behavior of real, sincere, women's and human rights activism by any stretch of the imagination.

Nor can I believe you really just pulled the "FEMEN has Asian friends so they can't be racist" card. Ugh.
