A sub group used Islam as basis to slam 3 jetliners into buildings of Men women and Children on 9-11. They said "The ruling to kill the Americans and their allies—civilians and military—is an individual duty for every Muslim."

They used words that represented an entire people even though we know a majority did not support them

Are you as fired up about that as you are a few naked women ?

Radical Islamist do more damage every day to the image of Islam than a few women with their boobs hanging out ever will. Where is the outcry from withing the Muslim community about radical Islams perversion of the faith ?

Criticize the criminals all you want - I will join you.

But when you try to "prove" that Islam is somehow behind those crimes, you will get called out. Every single time.

Completely agree. Protest by its very nature is often going to an extreme to prove a point. The cool thing is, the Muslim women could have a counter protest to make their point. Gotta love freedom of speech in the western world.

Great. Another person who has completely missed the fact that this entire thread is about counter-protests by Muslim women.

FEMEN needs to recognize that Muslim women do in fact have agency, and the idea that Muslim women are helpless, passively indoctrinated by the alleged evils of Islam, and desperately need of Western feminist help is oppressive and orientalist. Patriarchy is not specific to Islam — although there are inarguably extreme and truly saddening examples of misogyny in the Muslim community, patriarchy is a global issue. Furthermore, feminism is not only a Western institution — to assume that Muslim women need someone to "speak for" them is insulting to all the grassroots political organizing and activism that Muslim feminists have done. It's disturbing how a the rhetoric of "women's liberation" has been co-opted to justify aggression, violence, and prejudice against Muslim communities. In what way is it appropriate to "rescue" women by indulging in and re-circulating essentializing, stereotyped, and offensive depictions of their culture?

As I read this post, I'm ashamed that this happened in my own country. It's sad that people and societies around the world have issues when dealing with individuals because they are different. When I'm in the DR with my wife, and I go into a cantina by myself, or club to simply sit and have a beer and listen to the music, I have been mocked as being a sex tourist. I've actually got into a fight with a Dominicano while out dancing one evening with my wife because he simply figured she was a puta because she was with a white man. No man is going to disrespect my wife in any country. Why should it be any different for any other husband?

I also have to say that I'm guilty of responding badly to people simply because they are different than I am. I remember right after 911, I was in an airport, and watched as security detained a Muslim couple. When the husband (i think) protested, they were "harshly detained". I remember thinking "thats a relief". Now they wont be on my plane.

Traveling the world as I have done pretty much my entire adult life has taught me to be tolerant because people are just people. They are for the most part the same as everybody else, and pretty much want the same things in life. Job, money, family, happiness... Maybe a house with a dog and a whilte picket fence..

If only these Muslim women would get naked and insult their religion, then people might want to pay attention to what they say.

Otherwise, they must be shouted down, insulted, or (more often) simply ignored.

:) There is a lot of out cry from Muslims condemning what happened on 9-ll as well as any other act of terrorism claiming Islam as the reason......sadly it sells more news when the media focuses on the bad than it does to focus on the good.........

I did not pull any card at all. I merely pointed out that FEMEN has members all over the world and that it has members of all colors, races, etc. What exactly makes you say that they are a racist organization?

They are both racist and sexist because they are reinforcing stereotypes about Muslim women in Islamic societies, among other things. They are also coming from a place of narrow-minded privilege because most of them are from Europe, and that is where their ideology comes from. FEMEN is buying into a binary on feminism, that if you don't have the same values as them then you're a brainwashed little soul who needs "saving" by the white liberated ladies because they know "better". Who are they to bogart women's liberation? As I said before, feminists come in all colors, races, religions, and cultures. If they really want to do something helpful or useful then they should first acknowledge then support the efforts of feminist activists in Muslim societies who already are working toward change through substantive means, not immature shock tactics.

So the point is that the Muslim counter protest was family friendly?

You said "The cool thing is, the Muslim women could have a counter protest to make their point."

Interestingly enough, the fact that Muslim women are counter protesting, is the very subject of this thread !

The thread isn't about whether or not protest is often offensive; it's specifically about what Muslim women think of the hypocrisy of protestors who mock their religion, their culture, and their ethnicity under the guise of "supporting" and "defending" Muslim women's rights including the right to free speech - and then go so far as to insult these same Muslim women that they're supposedly supporting, calling them "stupid" and "brain-washed," if they criticize this type of tactic.

You realize your lumping every female Muslim into your snit about this protest? Some, including yourself didn't care for nor appreciate the way that the protest was conducted. Surely there are some who were neither bothered in the least or actually supported the protest?

Okay I don't know what to say anymore. I believe that the protesters should have every right to offend as others should have every right to express that they are indeed offended. It's all good.

The protestors have every right to do their thing, even if it's stupid and counter-productive - I absolutely agree

But it seems they must've broken some laws there in Free Europe, because they got arrested.

I don't doubt. That at all I wish. Muslims could get a vocal world stage to condem the bad things. Then perceptions might start to change.

Snit. Nothing condescending about you, is there ?

Yes, there are a few Muslim women who support the FEMEN protests - and they have spoken out.

But the overwhelming response from Muslim women (if you follow their media) has been disapproving.

Amina Tyler herself, the person at the center of the FEMEN protests and who supports FEMEN in general, agrees with most Muslim women that the use of religious symbols that represent all Muslims was "going too far."

Agreed. In the US, it's ok for groups and people to protest whatever they feel the need to protest. Homosexual rights, gun rights, anti gun rights, the KKK, skinheads, and other hate groups, NAACP, occupy groups... Come one come all... This is the only country in the world that allows lawful protest. No matter how offesive. The problem is people that feel the need to offend others. Thats the problem IMHO.
