Her act of protest went over poorly in Tunisia, where ultraconservative Islamists have gained ground since the revolution that ousted autocratic President Zine el Abidine ben Ali. Long seen as a regional leader in gender equality, Tunisia has since become a battleground for feminists, some of whom were seen as tainted because of their ties to the Ben Ali government. Since he was toppled, feminists have struggled to regain their political footing.

Outraged by the topless photo, a Salafi cleric who heads a commission on vice reportedly said Tyler should be stoned to death. Hackers defaced the Femen Tunisia page on Facebook, denouncing it as "debauchery." Tyler later told a French television crew she wanted to leave the country.

Ok we are talking about Saudi women and countries in which radical Islam oppresses women. Stop trying to make this about all of Islam cause its not

Nobody in this thread has defended anyone stoning anybody to death. That's definitely something well worth protesting.

It's FEMEN that made it "about all of Islam" when they co-opted Islamic symbols like the crescent, the prayer rug, the hijab, etc. to use as fun props in their protest. These are things that represent all Muslims, not just Salafists.

But it's not really a choice - not if you are culturally oppressed to have the choice taken away. Not to mention the legalities of the "choices" you are claiming exist, particularly with "religious police" in Saudi Arabia.

I disagree 120% on the "women should be given a stress free life" sentiment as I find it condescending, patronizing, misogynist and incredibly offensive.

Again, I am just stating my opinion on the matter. I am not part of the culture we are discussing and I feel that it is not appropriate for me to assert my Western beliefs, even if I believe them right, on a culture that I don't fully understand nor have any personal experience with.

"Cultural oppression" is a very subjective concept.

You know I was gonna ask. That thread did vaporize and it vaporized immediately after somebody dared me to find a quote I know that they made in that thread. i was thinking maybe I imagined it, but you just confirmed I did not.

OK folks if you want smoking gun this is it.

You cited something that Sofiyya had said about Saudi ladies (although you took it completely out of context) and then kept insisting that I said it.

You paint a very good picture of why and what it is to be a Muslim woman in another country. You are correct. Places like Afghanistan and Saudi are the places I am speaking of. I get called an Islamaphobe when i point out the oppression in those places.

I would love to hear more about the day to day life in non-radical countries.

Oh no I did not mean that. I am just meant you noticed it also..

No. Your posts get called Islamophobic when you try to imply that the problems in Afghanistan and Saudi are caused by Islam, and when you cut and paste from Islamophobic websites.

If we could call a truce for a second. I got to ask you what the Bob is . Cause when I was single, I dated several women who talked about bob a lot. Surely you did not mean ?

The Bob means Bob music - as in Marley. It was just a reference to Ready4ONE's mention of "skanking" (of course, the Bob song may not be the meaning he intended. The term can also refer to a particular Jamaican dance move, as well as other meanings.)

I was referring to my wife's experiences in the Emirates where the burqha makes cheating on your spouse considerably easier. Apparently a lot of ladies there used the anonymity they provide for stepping out on their man.

I still don't see any race baiting. What I do see is some getting their panties in a wad over nothing.

Let's say a bunch of white people want to protest FGM in Ethiopia... what if they make themselves up in black face and wear short Afro wigs, plaster themselves with Amharic symbols, and stage a screaming protest outside an Ethiopian church, including burning Lion of Judah flags? Would you see anything offensive in it ? Or would your wife see anything offensive in it ? Not trying to be offensive in my question - I'm just curious.

Um... again, what ? Talking about the death threats was not the Islamophobic part. It was the Pamela Geller-style "creeping sharia" stuff.

There is an Islmaphobe behind every door...

Sorry but your question erroneously presumes that FGM is supported by Ethiopian institutions. It isn't. It still happens out in the country but it is neither condoned nor prescribed by law. That said, where it happens no protest against it can be outrageous and painful enough. It's an inhumane practice that must stop.

This is exactly the point. Using symbols that represent an entire people in order to criticize inhumane practices committed by a sub-group who shares the ethnicity or religion or race of the entire people - that's what's offensive.

I don't disagree that it's offensive. Protest often is. So what?

The thread isn't about whether or not protest is often offensive; it's specifically about what Muslim women think of the hypocrisy of protestors who mock their religion, their culture, and their ethnicity under the guise of "supporting" and "defending" Muslim women's rights including the right to free speech - and then go so far as to insult these same Muslim women that they're supposedly supporting, calling them "stupid" and "brain-washed," if they criticize this type of tactic.

So sorry my bad. The oppression of women in Saudi, The Taliban, none of that is ever remotely related to Islam.. Don't know how I got such a foolish Idea in my head.

A sub group used Islam as basis to slam 3 jetliners into buildings of Men women and Children on 9-11. They said "The ruling to kill the Americans and their allies—civilians and military—is an individual duty for every Muslim."

They used words that represented an entire people even though we know a majority did not support them

Are you as fired up about that as you are a few naked women ?

Radical Islamist do more damage every day to the image of Islam than a few women with their boobs hanging out ever will. Where is the outcry from withing the Muslim community about radical Islams perversion of the faith ?

Completely agree. Protest by its very nature is often going to an extreme to prove a point. The cool thing is, the Muslim women could have a counter protest to make their point. Gotta love freedom of speech in the western world.
