My husband's Conditional Green Card expired in October. We have the NOA stating "Your conditional resident status is extended for...one year. During...the extension you are authorized employment and travel." We are planning to go to Turkmenistan, his native country, in December.

Is the
NOA
, along with the expired GC, sufficient for both leaving his country AND re-entering the US?

Should he make an appointment to get a new passport endorsement before traveling?

Based on my understanding of the NOA and what I could glean from this site and the USCIS site, the short answers are yes to the first question and no to the second. However, the idea of traveling with just a piece of paper and an expired GC is a bit disconcerting. If any of you have done so, please let me know how it went. Did you get through emigration (i.e., the airline accepted your paperwork, the officials didn't have doubts) in your country and immigration in the US without any problems?

Thanks in advance.

You are correct in your understanding. You won't have any problems travelling with the expired card and the NOA.

It should be fine. Don't forget most people travel with an expired visa in their passport and an AP when waiting for AOS to be processed.

Hi. You are correct in what you said, I'm in the same situation. However, I got an Infopass apointment and I got my passport stamped, just in case. I dont want any headaches. Your stamped passport and your expired GC is more important than a piece of paper (like the NOA). It's more official.

If I were your husband, I would get the stamp, it only takes 1 hour. I made the apointment for 8am, here in NY, where is busy, and I was at work by 9:30, didnt even have to take a day off. And I went alone, so my wife didnt even have to do anything.

Good Luck! Have fun in Turkmenistan.

Lydia,

Normally I'd say just like everyone else, the NOA and expired card are sufficient.

However, based on my limited knowledge of Turkmenistan, it might not be a bad idea to get the passport stamp as well.

He will have to satisfy whoever is working at the airport before he leaves (usually employees of the airline you're flying out on) and a stamp might be easier to deal with than just the letter + card. Make a photocopy of the letter!
