The pork thing is a big sacrifice. I was talking to a Chinese guy in Malaysia, he ran the bootleg movie shop I got my movies from. He was telling me how beautiful the Malays were. I said, why don't you talk to one? He said, "Man, I'm Chinese! We do pork three times a day!"

Yes, you have to be able to support them equally, I've read up on this when I first converted. It used to be something done out of nobility, like if the husband was killed in war, or your wife couldn't have kids. But now from what I've seen, it's a ploy to have more women when you get bored.

The logic of Muslims do or don't do X, therefore it is haram or not...

There's a range of opinion on the smoking thing though.

We've had this discussion, she is against it, but the thing about Islam is because it's legal according to the Quran, I could if I wanted to. But I know she wouldn't like it, so it's not a thought I'd entertain.

I can't imagine having two women or more to try to deal with .... Can you imagine if they ganged up on you. You know how they operate. One mad at you they are all mad at you

Like I said, from what I've seen, it's more of a ploy so the man can get more of what he wants. Usually the second wife is a younger version of the first. The first wife does most of the work and if applicable has the kids. Back in the day it was more honorable(husbands killed in war, couldn't have kids, etc) and I think now there might be some who do it for that reason.

Always reminds me of the Homer Simpson day dream of two wives. The context was "think of the things two wives could do for you" and the dream was him laying in a hammock while one wife dug a hole and another chopped wood. He kept saying "chop chop, dig dig"

There are specific restrictions on that allowance, one being that the husband must treat all wives equally and support them (and their children) all equally. Polygyny is not the norm in Muslim society, but rather the exception. In fact, acknowledging the difficulty of treating multiple wives equally and fairly, Qur'an encourages one wife.

Of course there are unscrupulous or selfish people who do not live up to the rules (as there are in any religion.)
