Foreign Tax Credit and AMT tax?

My brain has lost all capacity to understand how to file taxes. It's like I forget every year! lol With that being said, I am having extreme difficulty comprehending the foreign tax credit. I lived in USA as resident alien for entire 2012 but received EI and benefits payout from past Canadian employer. My understanding is I cannot claim this as a foreign income exclusion because I did not live in Canada at all during all of 2012.

Problem is I keep getting glitches in TurboTax for foreign tax exclusion. I had to delete and restart 5 times because I would get conflicting resuults each time, even though I always entered the exact same info. At first I was given a tax credit, then it glitched and wanted to charge me an AMT tax? I made no money in USA at all since I moved here, my husband is the bread winner and he doesn't make enough for an AMT tax so I can completely confused and this tax put the foreign credit to $0. I have no clue what is going on.

Any insight is very much appreciated.

Welps, even though it took 5 hours with turbotax support to get the foreign tax credit figured out, it did work out. Not much of a credit though. Had to take the itemized deduction route as our deduction amount totals were greater than the standard amounts. btw, it still kept prompting me about an AMT amount even though the tax agent told me that it is not relevant to us because we are not in a high income bracket. thankfully 2013 taxes will be different--NO CANADIAN INCOME TO CLAIM! yay! :) If anyone finds they ever need help with this section, perhaps I can lend a hand.
